🩺 The King's Speech stirred hope for a healthier UK – but will the necessary investments materialise? Months ago, the King's address set out bold promises: reduced NHS waiting times, enhanced mental health support, and a strong focus on preventive care. Yet, with £1.3 billion of tech funding now off the table, there seems to be a discrepancy between the lofty goals and the willingness to make the necessary investments in technology. While the Darzi Review highlighted how technology could transform healthcare, the lack of investment threatens to leave us stuck with outdated infrastructure. The dream of tech-driven, proactive healthcare is at risk, but it doesn't have to be. 🚀 It’s up to all of us—founders, innovators, and policymakers—to ensure that digital health and preventive care stay at the forefront of our national agenda. With huge growth in the UK I've been pondering "The ROI of Joining an Incubator or Accelerator" - then I found this article, which was interesting read. Highlights? There are so many interesting discussions happening at London Tech Week. One founder, CEO, and investor discussion that has kept me thinking is "The Nuts and Bolts of Building Your Own Business" with panelists Gerard Grech, Tom Bohills, Chris Woodward-Jones and Galia Beer-Gabel. Here are some of the insights gained: 💡 The importance of engaging a coach early to help the founder “let go” of aspects of the business in preparation for scaling. 💡 The chances of success and survival are greater if you have a co-founder, and the benefits that come with having a co-pilot to digest and strategize your journey. 💡 Ensure that you are intentional and take the time to define your values as a founder. 💡 Recognise what you are and aren’t good at early on; find processes and people to fill the gaps. You can’t be everyone and everything all of the time. 💡Consider trademarking your business. 💡 It’s okay to be vulnerable - in fact, it’s really helpful, especially when leveraging the expertise of your board and advisors; it makes your product better. 💡 Recognise that you are one of many investments for your investors - use their time wisely. 💡 The growing pains of trusting the people you hire to do the building for you. 💡 Advocacy being a key marker of product-market fit. 💡 Choosing investors for your business that are compatible with you, beyond the funding that they offer. 💡 Key considerations in PMF - deciding to either swim in ‘red waters’ (i.e., bloody waters) where products are already available and your mission is to make your offering better, or go into entirely new markets. September is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month. A crucial time to shine a light on a condition that affects roughly 1 in 10 women worldwide. PCOS is a complex condition that hugely impacts woman’s health and well-being. What is PCOS? PCOS is caused by an imbalance of hormones, leading to the development of cysts on the ovaries. These cysts can cause a range of symptoms, including irregular or missing periods, excessive hair growth, acne, and weight gain. It can also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The symptoms of PCOS can vary widely from person to person, but some of the most common include: - Irregular periods. Either no periods, infrequent periods, or heavy periods. - Excess facial and body hair, severe acne, and male-pattern baldness. - Enlarged ovaries containing numerous small fluid-filled sacs. - Weight gain often around the abdomen, and difficulty losing weight. - Persistent tiredness (fatigue) and low energy levels. - Mood changes. Including depression and anxiety. Raising awareness about PCOS is vital. Despite how many women have it, many remain undiagnosed or are misdiagnosed, leading to years of unnecessary suffering. Early diagnosis and intervention can help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of long-term complications. What Can You Do? - Educate Yourself and Others: Understanding PCOS can help you support those affected and advocate for better research and treatment options. - Encourage Regular Check-ups: Routine health screenings can lead to early detection and management. - Support Those Affected: Offer a listening ear and encourage open conversations about women’s health. As we mark PCOS Awareness Month, we need to come together and raise awareness for the millions of women impacted by this condition. Across 1000+ UK Care Companies, The Average Carer is 39 Years Old. On top of this, the UK population is ageing rapidly. When Stephen Forster dropped this on the Care to Share podcast, it crystallised a critical challenge facing our sector. We're staring down a generational cliff edge. Personally, I believe attracting more young people into face-to-face social care roles will improve social cohesion. Stephen makes a bold proposition: Care needs to be taught in schools. Not as a fallback career, but as a fundamental pillar of our society. I think a nationwide social media campaign, run by young influencers, has the potential to change the narrative around care.
