👣 Two major steps towards European Health Assurance ⭐ We are thrilled to support both Doccla and Neko Health expanding their footprint across Europe this week. However, the build is not easy; each country presents a unique set of challenges—distinct regulatory frameworks, differing care infrastructure, diverse payment models, and legacy technologies – that add complexity. But for the most ambitious, mission-driven European entrepreneurs, complex problems are the greatest opportunities! Born in Sweden, Doccla and Neko were built by Martin Ratz, Dag Larsson, Daniel Ek and Hjalmar Nilsonne respectively with big visions to scale across borders. While they operate at opposite sides of the acuity spectrum and have different approaches to reimbursement, they share an obsessive focus on building consumer-centric, technology-enhanced platforms that engage people in primary, secondary and tertiary preventive care. Just as most of the successful companies of the last decade have radically changed consumer behaviour, Doccla and Neko are standard bearers in a movement that will fundamentally transform how people approach their health. Since our investment, Doccla has scaled to serve over half of the NHS trusts, reducing emergency department visits by up to 60%. With a £35M Series B funding round, Doccla are primed to bring their virtual hospital solutions to France and Germany, bringing the same hospital-grade care to patients in the comfort of their home as in the UK. Neko has facilitated thousands of full body scans in Sweden and uncovered critical health issues that have spared many individuals. Now, with their expansion into the UK, they are cementing their position as the leading destination in Europe for consumers to gain a comprehensive understanding of their health. What grabs me most about Cara Health? Their stellar founding team. Their blend of medical, marketing, product, and technical expertise enables a hybrid digital/physical maternity care model validated by real insights. This talented, gritty trio can centralize fragmented solutions. With passion and vision, I believe they will thrive in femtech and make Cara Health a category leader. Impressed. The AI projects your results into the future so if you are off the mark with something you can see where it could lead. Your data is stored and you can come back each year to track your progress 📈 – Data suggests 80% of chronic disease is preventable through lifestyle changes. Even if the scan could go further, I rate the product 💯 1000s of people who might not have wanted to venture into a traditional medical clinic will opt for a Neko Health Scan and make lifestyle changes, this is a good new story 🙂 It shows that existing industries can be shaken up by a well designed product, a great vision and smart execution. He is seeking shareholder approval to delist the company from Euronext Amsterdam, two years after its initial public offering. 6. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐧 (𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐞) 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 Flo Health’s recent $1bn valuation has divided the Femtech community. Founded by two men, its success has sparked debate over men’s role in a space dedicated to solving women’s health issues. Many celebrate the achievement, while others express concern that it reflects wider problems - the gender investment gap & the historical underfunding of women’s health. They argue that male-founded companies in Femtech perpetuate inequality. There’s also frustration that men are entering Femtech without truly understanding the problems. Critics fear men might be driven by profit or unintentionally reinforce patriarchal structures, sidelining the women they’re meant to serve. I agree with much of this; the systematic underfunding of women’s health is disgusting, the gender health gap is indefensible & more investment in female founders is needed. But restricting participation based on gender (or age, ethnicity or any other factor) is short-sighted, especially given the scale of the problems in women’s health. More broadly, inclusivity cannot be built from a place of exclusion. So what is the criteria for inclusion? And why do some suggest that men are not as qualified? 1️⃣ “Men lack personal experience”. This is illogical & short-sighted. Should Evelyn Health, the company I started in the premenstrual health space, be led by & only hire women with PMS & PMDD? Must an erectile dysfunction startup be led by men with ED & only hire men with ED? We need empathy (& competency) & the suggestion that men lack empathy is baseless. 2️⃣ “Men are only driven by profit”. Men, like women, enter industries for a range of reasons beyond profit & I believe that is equally true with Femtech. Personally, I’m deeply motivated to build a better, fairer future for my daughter & I don't believe I should stop fighting for this because I'm her father & not her mother. I know many male founders who are similarly motivated. 3️⃣ “Men are diverting funding from female founders”. The gender investment gap is real & deplorable but it’s driven by systemic bias not individual founders. We need targeted solutions, such as diversifying investor pools & changing investment criteria, that enable competency-based assessment. And rather than limiting male founders, we should encourage & support female founders. This is not a zero sum game. 4️⃣ “Men will perpetuate patriarchal structures”. Some men (& some women) will do so but this overlooks how impactful men can be as agents of change & how diverse leadership can encourage equality. Ultimately, intentionality & not gender will break these structures down. 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 It appears that at the heart of these concerns is trust; can we trust men to build safe, effective solutions with women’s needs in mind? I believe that we should be open-minded & optimistic, whilst recognising that all founders earn trust over time through their actions. #womenshealth #femtech

I’m starting a new series of weekly reflections. Looking back at the week, assessing how the world, events and trends will impact the future of IP value maximization. So here it goes. 🚨Tariffs and the Rising Threat of Counterfeits🚨 As we look ahead to 2025, the threat of new tariffs should raise alarms for brand owners and enforcement agencies alike. While much has been talked and written about potential economic or employment impacts, little has been said about the impact this will have on counterfeits and illicit trade. Historically, when the cost of legitimate products spikes, due to large tax, excise tax or tariff increases, criminal organizations move rapidly to exploit this new opportunity. We believe the result of tariffs will be a dramatic and immediate surge in the availability of fake and often dangerous counterfeit goods, which will undermine consumer trust and could be detrimental to brand valuations. Furthermore, it could be a substantial drag on corporate earnings and the economy as a whole. Counterfeit products already represent a major threat in the U.S. market, but tariffs may push this issue further into overdrive. Illicit actors thrive on price disparities, creating opportunities to flood markets with low-cost, fraudulent goods while bypassing regulatory safeguards. Counterfeits already experienced rapid growth during the pandemic fueled by the exponential growth in online shopping. This built an existing superhighway for counterfeits into the US. Tariffs will accelarate this trend further. At Venture Global, we recognize the critical role businesses and private public partnerships have in tackling this challenge. Over the next few months and the coming year, our team will work closely with our clients, brand owners and law enforcement partners to anticipate these shifts, strengthen anti-counterfeit strategies, and safeguard both brands and consumers. We will continue to rely heavily on the extensive networks of service provider partners we have built that includes online search firms, investigators, litigators and a deep bench of retired law enforcement experts to tackle this issue. This is a complex issue requiring a multi-faceted response—collaboration between government, industry, and enforcement agencies and new or strengthened private private public partnership will be key. Businesses and brand owners will be well advised to fortify their brands and brand protection programs againts the incoming threat, before tariffs are implemented. The biggest opportunity for healthcare is in emerging markets! At the recent Milken Institute Conference Middle East, Helmut Schuehsler of TVM Capital Healthcare (a specialised healthcare PE/Growth equity firm with over $1bn AUM focused on Asia & the Middle East) highlighted a significant insight for the healthcare sector: "The biggest opportunity for healthcare is in emerging markets." Schuehsler emphasized that healthcare in these regions: -Is less ossified, offering a less rigid framework for innovation. -Has fewer entrenched systems, which allows for more flexibility and adaptability. -Is more open to new ideas, fostering an environment ripe for groundbreaking advancements. I was also truly honored to witness my friend, Geetha Tharmaratnam, speak passionately & compellingly about the critical issues of health equity and access, highlighting that these challenges persist not just in developing regions, but also in developed markets. Her dedication to these global health issues is both inspiring and a clear call to action. To give you an idea of the scale of usage of GLP-1 receptor agonists, in the US, 12% of the population have used a GLP-1 therapy (things like Wegovy or Zepbound). Analysts believe peak sales for GLP-1 drugs could reach $200Bn by 2030. This enormous adoption has utterly transformed the fortunes of Novo Nordisk and Lilly taking them to the top of the market capitalisation tree in the public markets ($874Bn Lilly, share price up 750% in the last 5 years, $400Bn, up 360% in the last 5 years). Oral GLP-1 RA are only likely to increase prescriptions, but with that comes a greater focus on the long term outcomes of patients who have taken these therapies. Known issues around muscle wastage and long-term weight regain will bring greater scrutiny as these drugs become population level interventions. I spoke about pivots in a recent post being driven in DeepTech and BioTech by exceptional science and this announcement from MitoRx Therapeutics is a great example of how experimental data can inform key commercial strategy and how the next wave of obesity therapies can be developed here in the UK. The transition from functional expert to enterprise leader is one of the great challenges for any life science founder. Michael Watkins, Professor of Leadership and Organisation Change at IMD and author of the pioneering book "The First 90 Days", wrote a brilliant article in Harvard Business Review about the Seven Seismic Shifts involved in the transition to leading an enterprise; Specialist to Generalist, Analyst to Integrator, Tactician to Strategist, Bricklayer to Architect, Problem-solver to Agenda-setter, Warrior to Diplomat and Supporting Cast to Lead Role ("How Managers Become Leaders"). All these transitions require shifts in mindset and behaviour, if you want to lead a business, and they are not that easy to achieve. Every startup founder should read Marc Andreessen’s ideas on product/market fit (PMF). I’d go as far as to say you may not realise the point or goal of your startup without it. Summarising it won’t do it justice but if I had to condense it into 10 words they would be: “The only thing that matters is getting to product/market fit…” It’s so important but so misunderstood I’ve decided to publish a mini-series about PMF, this is part 1. If you can’t find the time to read the entire blog below, here are some of the highlights: ————— ….what correlates the most to success—team, product, or market? Or, more bluntly, what causes success? And, for those of us who are students of startup failure—what’s most dangerous: a bad team, a weak product, or a poor market? …I’ll assert that market is the most important factor in a startup’s success or failure In a great market—a market with lots of real potential customers—the market pulls product out of the startup The product doesn’t need to be great; it just has to basically work. And, the market doesn’t care how good the team is, as long as the team can produce that viable product And when you have a great market, the team is remarkably easy to upgrade on the fly Conversely, in a terrible market, you can have the best product in the world and an absolutely killer team, and it doesn’t matter—you’re going to fail. …let me present Rachleff’s Law of Startup Success: The #1 company-killer is lack of market. Andy puts it this way: When a great team meets a lousy market, market wins. When a lousy team meets a great market, market wins. When a great team meets a great market, something special happens. …but assuming the team is baseline competent and the product is fundamentally acceptable, a great market will tend to equal success and a poor market will tend to equal failure. Market matters most. Great products are really, really hard to build. Markets that don’t exist don’t care how smart you are. You can always feel when product/market fit isn’t happening. And you can always feel product/market fit when it’s happening. The customers are buying the product just as fast as you can make it—or usage is growing just as fast as you can add more servers. Lots of startups fail before product/market fit ever happens. My contention, in fact, is that they fail because they never get to product/market fit. Do whatever is required to get to product/market fit. Including changing out people, rewriting your product, moving into a different market, telling customers no when you don’t want to, telling customers yes when you don’t want to, raising that fourth round of highly dilutive venture capital—whatever is required. When you get right down to it, you can ignore almost everything else. Recently completed an investment in a #HealthTech startup - Attomarker UK. The company specialises in rapid diagnostics using blood-samples from a finger-prick for many conditions including #LongCovid. But from my pov the big promise of their tech is early detection of viral infections v/s bacterial infections. This can therefore significantly reduce the use of Antibiotics that the medical world globally is so used to as the first line of treatment. In countries like #India, where #antibiotic resistance, due to over-prescription, is a massive problem, this tech could be a boon for patients. While England was the first country in the world to offer diabetes prevention programmes at a national level, let's face it: looking at completion rates of existing programmes - averaging below 30% - we haven't cracked the code on diabetes prevention yet. Good news? We’re getting closer. Our Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Decathlon programme (see here: https://lnkd.in/eD5vq7XQ) with NHS South West London (HIN evaluation ongoing), involving 70 participants with an average age of 56 at risk of Type 2 Diabetes, delivered some truly outstanding results: 👉 The programme boasted a retention rate exceeding 90% 👉 Participants achieved an average weight loss of 3 kg, with one participant losing a remarkable 10.3 kg 👉 Daily step counts increased by 45% 👉 Up to 75% of users on our programme were from the BAME and lower socio-economic population The secret? The trial embraced the concept of 'financial prescribing’, encouraging healthcare professionals to refer patients to non-medical interventions, like Sweatcoin, and offer financial rewards for maintaining an active lifestyle.
