Contrary to expectations, AI-powered tools have generated high-performing creatives (= %Conv Rate 1.5x-2x higher), challenging assumptions about image authenticity's impact on Conversion Rates. Here are some of the key features of Apple Intelligence: ➜𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀: It offers system-wide writing tools that can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various apps, including Mail, Notes, Safari, Pages, Keynote, and even third-party apps. ➜𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗶𝗿𝗶: Siri is now empowered with on-screen awareness, allowing it to understand and take action with things on your screen. ➜𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: This feature allows users to create fun images in seconds using generative AI. ➜𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀: Apple Intelligence is built with privacy at its core, and it utilizes Private Cloud Compute to process information on your device whenever possible. IAB Digital Adspend 2023 is out today 🚀 Produced with PwC UK, the report shows spend grew 11% to a total of £29.6bn in 2023. Key takeouts include: 📺 CTV was a key component of growth and grew by 21% YoY to £1.17bn 🎙️Spend on podcasts grew 23% to £83m 👀 Digital out-of-home included in Adspend for the first time with spend at £841m 🔎 Search maintained dominance, accounting for 50% of the total market 🗣️ “The latest results show how advertisers are embracing the diverse array of digital channels on offer. Are we at the end of creative A/B testing? How did Google, a company with access to the most comprehensive and advanced consumer data and ad testing tech that will likely ever be developed, publicly face-plant and burn millions with its Olympics tv spot? Like many others, when I saw Google's AI ad during the first weekend of the Olympics, I thought, "Wow, that's depressing." In the ad, a father uses an AI prompt to help his child draft a fan letter to an Olympic athlete. Public outcry following the ad was swift and damning: Google was advertising what many of us despise about not only AI-generated content, but also the worst-case scenario, in which simple joyful acts of humanity are delegated to machines. Instead of encouraging his child to use her human brain and emotions to write a letter to her hero with her own hand, the parent passes the job along to the computer. Why? In the name of efficiency? What child needs to be efficient? After much public backlash, Google pulled the ad, so now it's running the Jay-Z spot (a much better ad, IMO). Google's in-house team put the "fan letter" spot together and noted that it tested well. But the marketing and technology industries have a bad habit of ignoring any negative feedback. They dismiss critics in favor of false positive empirical tests, without actually taking into account that in a diverse world filled with multitudes of perspectives on technology and creativity, many are deeply skeptical of the fundamental proposition of AI. Did Google even ask anyone from outside tech or its own creative testing pools what they thought of the ad? And if they did, would they have listened to the feedback? It reminded me of that Mad Men episode where Pete, the account guy, decides to pull a highly researched "death wish" concept from the literal trashcan to pitch to his tobacco industry clients. The clients are horrified: who in their right mind would advertise such a morbid idea? It's fundamentally anti-social. If Google had anticipated feedback from outside its own corporate rah-rah Silicon Valley friends, they likely would have swiftly discovered extremely common dissenting opinions. (And if they had researched their own search terms/websites, they would have been able to identify common sources of anxiety about creativity and AI.) Digital creative testing only provides immediate feedback from the quick clickers and easily sold. The lurkers (most of us) don't respond to creative testing at all. And when a company doesn't bother to listen to any negative feedback ever... all the testing goes out the window. When pitching new ideas, we not only have to read the room; we have to ask the room for its criticism and anticipate many perspectives. Feedback is necessary, even when we don't want to hear it. We're not *all* Luddites for being skeptical of industries that want to replace human emotion with a statistical approximation of writing. It doesn't take a data scientist to figure that out.
