One step forward two steps Black? We want to hear your experiences of what it’s like to be Black in PR and comms today. Together with PRWeek UK and Opinium, we are opening our One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey to uncover inequity where it exists, recognise successes in creating a diverse pipeline and retaining talent, and crucially - to provide a benchmark for the industry to make change. The inaugural One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey in 2020 found that almost half of Black communication professionals had never received an internal promotion, with talent having to move to a different agency or company to rise up the ranks.  Has progress been made? Recently our Social Media Executive, Mia Green, and Social Media Manager, Lois Hoff, attended D&AD in London and here's a few things they learnt... ✔️ Algorithms are not as complex as we think, play with them. Essentially it is a breakdown of how TikTok reads your mind; it’s a flow of information and processes. Like making a cup of tea. 🌎 AI has a (pretty scary) large and growing carbon footprint. 1 prompt on chat GBT is the equivalent of 7L of water. 📱 42% of 18-25 year olds believe it's too hard to break into the creative industry. 👋🏻 Ignore the 'viral' TikTok formats. Focus on telling a story instead. 👀 Humans are driven by emotion - the importance of the value of products is decreasing in marketing but the access to human emotion is increasing. We need to tap into this.

TikTok Shop Set to Launch in Ireland and Spain TikTok Shop was expected to expand across Europe this summer, but ByteDance paused its plans. Now, it's set to launch in Ireland and Spain in October, with more countries to follow next year. Initially launched in parts of Asia in early 2022, TikTok Shop expanded to the UK and US. However, further European expansion was delayed after disappointing results in the UK. This spring, TikTok invited merchants in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain to beta test, hinting at a broader European rollout. ByteDance then decided to focus on growing TikTok Shop in the US and managing regulatory concerns in Europe. According to Bloomberg, ByteDance has now informed partners to prepare for the launch in Ireland and Spain this October. A dedicated team in Spain is ready to ensure a smooth rollout, and TikTok is hiring for various roles to support the launch. The 2024 PRWeek UK Pay Gap Report has a lot to unpack. Beyond the lack of progress on gender and ethnicity pay equity, the biggest surprise is that the largest PR agencies have never shared their data. At Woodrow, we believe transparency is how we raise the bar—for ourselves and the industry. While looking closely at our own operations can be daunting, it’s necessary. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made—transparent salaries, clear career paths, and a commitment to inclusivity. But we know we’re not perfect. Participating in PRWeek UK's Pay Gap Report, alongside People Like Us, is how we stay accountable and push the industry forward. This could be one of the last Pay Gap Reports before ethnicity pay gap reporting becomes law. With the new Labour Government’s pledge, larger firms will soon be required to report.
