Back in April Kingpins Quarterly interviewed the legendary Jerome Dohan. It brought back memories of when the denim industry had a mission to create, remember Heather Jerrehian ? Anyway, I was interested in a part of the interview where Andrew asks the following: JD: Women’s is worse than men’s because men’s didn’t enter the market like women’s did over the past 20 years. Men's were the first guys to make jeans and then women’s became popular. And after being popular, there were brands left and right that opened up, and jeans didn’t mean really anything anymore. It was about price point, and it was about picking a basic, and I didn’t even understand the market after. AO: Do you understand it right now? Because I don’t. JD: I don’t. I understand that people are not creative and because the people are not creative, they work with price points. AO: When you started your brands there were all these stores in Los Angeles like Kitson and Fred Segal. They’re all gone. Why do you think they’re gone, and what’s going to happen after that? JD: Stores like Kitson wanted to make more money [on] the product. And when you think about that…, you don’t think of a product anymore, and a lot of brands that were sold in those stores didn’t give the image of the store anymore. And business became tough, very tough, especially for department stores. Look at Barneys. Barneys was the first department store to close, and [I knew] this was going to be a big deal… Barneys was a store that was a landmark. People used to come to LA and where did they go? They’d go to these kinds of stores. The day it closed, I knew the market was going to change. Florian Schneider what are your thoughts on how the stores are looking in today's environment?

How can fashion brands ensure that Inclusive Sizing remains a priority? 👗 In the Autumn/Winter 2024 fashion shows, plus-size models made up just 0.8% across 230 shows and almost 9,000 looks. ➡ London led in size inclusivity with 12% plus and mid-size models on the runway. Lets talk British Made and The Big Trade Off When I started my brand, I knew right from the start that I wanted everything to be produced locally right here in the UK. To be able to support the local made fashion industry, knowing I am using fully audited factories with happy workers being paid a fair wage, and to give the brand transparency was incredibly important to me when building the foundations of my brand. But what is interesting and what I am learning throughout my journey with building a sustainably focused brand, is there is always a trade-off. This was a big topic at a recent panel event I went to with the materialist faturing Henry Hales from SIRPLUS and Louise Petranca from The Fold London, and to my surprise what many other sustainably lead fashion brands have gone through as well. I had never framed it in this way. This instantly made me feel less alone in this area, and gave me a little comfort that I’m not the only one who has a continuous inner battle of which direction to take my brand whilst making sure it actually survives! I have found it is pretty tricky to tick every sustainability box from the get go whilst trying to grow the brand, whist also keeping the price point accessible (which is another huge ethos of the brand!) Choosing to produce in the UK brings with so many wonderful benefits, but it also brings with its own unique set of limitations, including the type of yarns I’m able to work into. I am continuously striving to bring in more eco-friendly yarns into the collection that are also vegan friendly, but producing out of the UK there some pretty big roadblocks nehind the scenes in terms of availability, capability and price. I am often asked, why don’t you move your production to China, it will be cheaper and you can use more recycled yarns which are more readily available.. But if I did that, I would be going against everything that the brand stands for, which is to bring production back to the UK (one colourful knit at a time) to support the local economy, keep my carbon footprint low and have that transparency. Thus.. the trade off. By choosing to produce in the UK, and sticking to this core value, it’s taking me a little longer to get to other areas of the business where I want them to be. This does not mean I will stop striving to get every box ticked, but more that it is a working progress as I navigate this small UK produced biz world. Is this the right approach? Time will tell, but it feels right for me, and for the brand and if anything having core values to stick to is what I believe will give the brand the right foundations to really go the distance. I want to highlight a maybe not so well know fact about the fashion industry . It’s bigger than you may want to acknowledge . Especially following my last post 😁. I believe it’s helpful for you to know where things came from because imitation is the highest form of flattery (and restitution ) UBUNTU is a Bantu word that relatively represents the African humanist philosophy. Noting traits like generosity, compassion , honesty, the ability to share. If you know me , sharing is caring 😇. The motherland of Africa is the origin of many textile techniques that the usual suspects of the focal fashion monopolies have used for centuries some of which have even been called out as trend 😑 , a backhanded acknowledgement of cultural foundation. The African influence has been there since the beginning. Usually the beginning most would not want to acknowledge. The diaspora has been busy expanding, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and style. Wonderful happenings in Nigeria. Adire Dye , of the Yoruba women or south west Nigeria is a Indigo technique. Just one of those historical textile influences that the western world has adapted into a major industrial cornerstone. It has also cultivated phenominal gains in Tech , Music, and Gaming. Fred Swaniker is someone you should say hi to if you want more insight on the statistics that support this. A pleasure hearing him speak at the The Business of Fashion #voices2024 Global Event 🥰. My favorite time of year for BOF. My Alma Mater Fashion Institute of Technology does me proud with its Museum at FIT Africa's Fashion Diaspora exhibit that closed out 2024. Hard to believe it's been 10 years of #fashionrevolution. Not much has changed for those who are trapped in the clothing supply chain, mainly women not paid enough to pay their living costs and who are routinely abused, exploited and forced into unpaid overtime. As legislation to protect workers is beginning to be enacted, it's important that Europeans are asking their candidate MEPs if they support the Green Deal and a supply chain overhaul. The fashion industry is completely unregulated hence the issue.
