🌎 Sustainability remains a key passion of mine and with a background in the energy sector, it is always exciting to see progress there. Last week, IBM launched the first-ever State of Sustainability Readiness Report 2024. The report shows that organisations are well underway with their plans, but there is huge room and a need for growth to drive both organisational and environmental sustainability. 🇬🇧 Only around a third of British companies actively use #AI for sustainability, compared to 44% globally. The report offers clear, actionable recommendations to achieve #sustainability goals, wherever you are on your journey. The new National Energy System Operator case study is a great example of an organisation using tech to pave the way for a zero-carbon, sustainable future. Together, the team built the Open Balancing Platform (OBP), enabling efficient energy dispatch from thousands of renewable sources, balancing supply and demand in real-time. Since its December launch, an estimated 37,400 metric tons of CO2 has been saved. Research published by IBM this week found that 64% of UK&I CEOs say they will take more risks than competitors when it comes to AI to maintain a competitive edge. This raises several ethical considerations, many of which were discussed at a packed #Climb24 investor conference in Leeds on Wednesday. The ‘AI Ethics Unpacked’ session in particular served up too many interesting insights to mention in one LinkedIn post. But I’ll try. I particularly enjoyed Sherin Mathew’s (founder and CEO of AI Tech North ) opening remarks regarding ‘ethics as a superpower’. He said that, by integrating ethical considerations from the start, it is ensured that AI technologies are developed responsibly, which helps avoid future issues related to bias, privacy, and misuse. “AI is powerful, but ethical AI is super powerful,” Sherin said. “Being ethical in the long run plays as a superpower. Ethics should be integrated from the start, not as an afterthought.” James Hall of Parallax made the point that commercial pressures might cause a company to rush part of a project, causing the evaluation framework that it set out at the start to go out of the window. In turn, this leads to bias creeping into companies' products. James argued the importance of balancing data collection for AI improvements with privacy rights and called for public scorecards to hold companies accountable. All of the panellists called for strong guidelines on measuring and mitigating bias in AI.  It was an insightful session that provided plenty of food for thought, raising more questions than it answered.
