Being fully online, this provides brands with access to quality and scaled first-party audiences, sure to challenge some of the larger walled gardens! With all these retail media networks popping up, what is the real benefit to brands? Product innovation - without requiring expensive shelf space, you can quickly get new products in front of different audiences and test the response rate, using real insight to iterate and adapt! New year, new me posts! Yep, most of us cringe a little when seeing these but you can't ignore January as a time when many people reflect and want to sort out their life at bit. You know, the really important things like unsubscribing from the 30 emails you signed up for in December in a panic to get a discount code from the welcome email for a gift you wanted to buy. 😊   But seriously, January is a perfect time for email marketers to send out a preference centre email. Responses should be higher - giving you a good foundation for segmentation for the rest of 2025.   WHY JANUARY?   1. New Year, new subscriptions: January is the time when people reorganise their lives, including their digital habits. They’re more likely to update their preferences to match their goals and interests for the year ahead.   2. Post-holiday cleanup: Subscribers may feel overwhelmed after Christmas and eager to declutter their inboxes. A well-timed preference email shows you’re considerate of their time and inbox space.   3. Set the tone for the year: By reminding subscribers that they can control their experience, you’re building trust and reinforcing your commitment to relevance and value in every email.   4. Plan for big events: Asking subscribers for their preferences regarding major events like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day now is a proactive way to reduce upset and stress. By gathering this information now, you won't run the risk of being insensitive by asking too close to the day itself.   WHAT MAKES A GREAT PREFERENCE CENTRE?   A strong preference centre isn’t just a tool, it’s a relationship builder. Here are some features to consider:   1. Transparency: Let subscribers know exactly what they’re signing up for. Avoid surprises.   2. Flexibility: Offer options for content types, frequency, and preferred channels. Empower them to choose what works best.   3. User-friendly design: Ensure it’s intuitive, mobile-optimised, and visually appealing. No one likes to fill out a boring looking form.   4. Make it fun to complete: Use engaging language and CTAs to make the exercise seem more fun than it really is.   5. Content categories: What topics interest them most? (e.g., industry insights, product updates, events)   6. Frequency options: Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly updates?   7. Channel preferences: Do they prefer email, SMS, or another channel?   8. Event-specific preferences: Do they want updates or offers for events like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or Black Friday?     By taking the time to ask subscribers what they want, you’re starting the year with better engagement and less churn.
