This was the perfect read for me today on EICC Ideas Hub, as we pondered ideas about how #BusinessEvents can be viewed as part of policy delivery. The wise words of Martin Fullard from The Business of Events stopped me in my tracks. "We look at similar industries, not just in the UK, but globally, before ‘stress testing’ the concepts with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Events. Any policy initiative has to be realistic, and APPG members feedback on whether or not something needs further research." I was asked by a Business Events Bureau recently to list all the suppliers we will be using for an incentive group we have visiting there later this year, and the answer is 15 for a smaller group and only over a 4 night period. I would estimate that on average we would have between 10 and 20 interactions for each Supplier, to cover off logistics and budget information in the lead up to each event. This means that for this particular group, we are engaging with our suppliers between 150 and 300 times to ensure everything runs smoothly and this is before we even get there! As you can see in this diagram, there are many benefits of using quality suppliers that many of our clients will never see, but they will always benefit with savings to their bottom line and a quality event that runs seamlessly from start to finish.

My vision when setting up the #Eventsustainability #supplychain roundtable in the north east was to bring our key industry suppliers together to start discussions around challenges and opportunities we face when making our events more sustainable. The group focuses on how we can collaborate to make the world of events - starting on our home turf - more sustainable and deliver positive impact through our activities. It takes time to make #change. Yesterday was the third roundtable of the year and I think we are making progress as a group and I thank everyone in the group for getting involved. And thanks also to our hosts for our 2024 meetings Crowne Plaza Newcastle - Stephenson Quarter The Glasshouse International Centre for Music and Newcastle City Council. BeaconHouse Events has reduced carbon on our annual events on average by 25% (more on this to follow in our sustainability journey report which we’ll publish at the end of 2024) We discussed ideas on how we can drive more change together, as an events industry in the north east: 🌍 An initiative to tackle food waste and give back to the community 📊 A possible ESG events impact tool to help us target change through our activities, from the outset. ⭐️ Involvement in development of toolkits for the new north east regenerative tourism and events framework to help suppliers digest and understand how to deliver change.
