Check out Richard Jones's latest G10 FX Weekly: More Downside for UK Short-End Yields, Bearish GBP/CAD Summary -The 2-year UK gilt yield has fallen over 30bps from last month’s peak. -This followed the dovish policy update from the Bank of England (BoE)’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) last month, voting 7-2 in favour of holding rates. Two dissenters (including Deputy Governor Dave Ramsden) called for an immediate cut. -The BoE updates policy next week during the UK election campaign, in which the MPC operates a self-imposed purdah. Market Implications -We think the recent downward momentum for UK short-end yields can continue and reiterate our initial target of 4% outlined last month. -We think lower UK short-end yields will weaken the pound, and we express this view via GBP/CAD. There's interesting analysis in the Telegraph of a £4.7bn takeover offer from Abu Dhabi-led consortium for Hargreaves Lansdown. HL was a big success story for decades. But competition from cheaper rivals and reputational damage resulting from the Woodford scandal have weighed heavily. For me, the company faces two big problems. First, the fees its charges are unsustainably high (its 0.45% platform fee especially). But secondly, and more importantly, its USP — the notion that it can identify, in advance, the star fund managers of the future — has been shown to be an illusion. HL has the potential to be a force for good in UK financial services.. The new Labour government has plenty to look at and one area they need to focus on currently is to simplify ISA rules in a bid to bolster the UK equity market and attract more investment in British stocks. Broker AJ Bell advocates for a "radical" overhaul of ISAs, proposing a single product that combines different ISA types and suggests raising the overall ISA allowance to £25,000. Michael Summersgill, CEO of AJ Bell, believes these changes would streamline long-term investing. AJ Bell also recommends eliminating stamp duty on UK investments to incentivise investing in UK assets. Diversification of portfolios and the rise of passive investing have contributed to significant outflows from UK equity funds, with retail investors withdrawing nearly £55 billion since 2016, as noted by the Investment Association. In contrast, US and global funds have seen substantial inflows, with North American and global funds attracting £7.8 billion and £7.58 billion respectively in the first half of 2024, according to Calastone. London Stock Exchange-listed companies are currently more affordably priced than their US counterparts, suggesting a favorable investment opportunity. Positive UK economic indicators, a shifting international perception, and potential factors like improved European political stability and a stronger sterling could further enhance the UK equity market, according to Michael Brown, chief investment officer at Martin Currie. It's been confirmed by Rishi Sunak that a general election will take place on the 4th of July, giving both candidates around 6 weeks of campaigning time. Markets are beginning to pay close attention to this election where the incumbent prime minister is significantly behind in the polls. A shift of government, from Conservative to Labour, could have profound impacts on the economy and thus sterling. Despite some weakness yesterday, the pound has not yet seen a major reaction to the news. This is expected as the requirement for a general election was already approaching. The next phase that could see an impact on the currency market will be via the various polls that will be taken in the run up to the big day. Any clear outcome seen in the polls will begin to take effect. Today's economic calendar sees UK retail sales, German GDP, and US durable goods. Have a good weekend.
