Great pleasure to be back in Manchester as I start my induction as Chair of Health Innovation Manchester (HIiM), beginning September 2024. The Greater Manchester (GM) integrated health and care record is ground-breaking. It provides health and social care professionals with vital information to inform safer decision-making about care and treatment for ~3 million people in Greater Manchester. It takes data from social care and health and provides a brilliant platform for longitudinal health https://lnkd.in/e5u3fCHf Look at some of the best integrated health systems in the world, be they in North America, Israel, Europe, Singapore or Oceania, and few have social care data. The GM integrated care record opens up enormous possibilities in care, research, education and population health. 21,000 clinicians (and 414 primary care practices) are already using it with ‘dynamic care planning.’ And it’s getting stronger every day. It’s one to watch as we push the boundaries in health, care and life sciences through our partnerships. We welcome all interest from those that wish to “add life to years and years to life”. This success has come from the formidable leadership of our outgoing Chair, Rowena Burns, our CEO, cardiac surgeon, Ben Bridgewater (pictured) and talented staff across GM. I’ve seen bits of combined care and health data work in pockets around the world, but nothing on this scale. Come to Manchester if you want to drive innovation at scale. What can you expect from the Welsh-grown value-based healthcare exec education course? There are several excellent offerings for #vbhc education around the world now, and rightly so. I noted in particular this year Dr. Slaveyko Djambazov David N. Bernstein and colleagues in Bulgaria gave a fabulous series. It is vitally important for us all to gain the skills to reform and transform healthcare delivery and to pull this cart forward together. What is our USP? Our life science industry colleagues get loads out of the boundary spanning conversations. Finally, we learn and improve from your participation so come and join us. It's all about the mission. Our latest study has implications for all nurses who utilise algorithmic tools, such as early warning systems, in their practice. Although experienced nurses appreciate the support of early warning tools, most value patient safety above the tools and rely on their higher-order thinking. NHS Chief Executive, Amanda Pritchard has announced a programme to transform NHS leadership and management over the next 2 years. Leaders and managers shape the culture, experience and outcomes across the service for patients and our staff. So this programme won’t be optional; it will be an essential expectation of all leaders and managers, whether clinical or operational. This programme is being overseen by Navina Evans, Chief Workforce, Training and Education Officer, while Sam Allen, Chief Executive of North East and North Cumbria ICB has been tasked with supporting NHS England’s team to deliver the programme.   The programme has 3 workstreams which will set the right standards, improve our development offer, and nurture and deploy talent across the NHS. Workstream 1: Set the right standards for our leaders and managers NHS England will introduce a new Management and Leadership Framework to create greater parity with clinical and other professions and consistency at all levels of management and leadership. The framework is being developed now and implementation is expected to start in summer 2025. The framework will comprise: a code of practice to set out the values and behaviours expected of all leaders and managers in the NHS and social care the professional standards that leaders and managers must demonstrate the competencies which underpin the standards and outline the specific skills, knowledge and abilities individuals need to perform effectively at each level Workstream 2: Develop our leadership and management  It’s not enough to set out the right standards for leaders and managers – they need quality-assured support and training along the way too. That’s why we will set out: a new accredited leadership and management development curriculum which will describe the requirements for delivering high quality training and development refreshed leadership development programmes which update current Leadership Academy programmes against the new standards Workstream 3: Talent support and career development We need to improve how we attract, identify, mobilise and retain talent and high potential at all levels in the NHS. We will do this by: strengthening the talent pipeline for chair, non-executive director, chief executive and executive roles. This will include the Aspiring Chief Executive programme and interventions to attract new talent, and to better identify and develop existing non-executive directors through the redesigned Aspiring Chair Programme, starting in spring 2025 support senior leaders to work in the most challenged systems by identifying existing talent and current barriers to deployment at pace, with a longer-term plan to ensure the most experienced and effective leaders are identified and supported to take on these roles, and we’ll set out this plan in spring 2025 https://lnkd.in/ewJFpZS7

The CPOC has today launched its manifesto ‘A Blueprint for NHS Efficiency’. This presents ideas that we hope all political parties to adopt into their own manifestos.   The report sets out that: NHS waiting lists are at crisis levels. The NHS has too many cancellations, complications, and lengthy hospital stays – often due to patients arriving for surgery in an unfit state. These can be avoided by concerted action to turn waiting lists into preparation lists, including screening and actively supporting patients to improve and maintain their health while they wait. Better procedures to help patients drink, eat and mobilise after surgery can improve patient outcomes and reduce length of hospital stay, and better discharge planning can reduce readmission rates. National NHS bodies, including NHS England, should continue and expand efforts to mandate, encourage and facilitate adoption of these measures. Implementing these policies would save the NHS money, but set-up costs are a barrier. Hence, we propose a £100 million ‘NHS efficiencies transformation fund’.
