Another NHS Providers conference done and dusted. It’s been an insightful two days filled with impactful keynotes and valuable discussions on some of the most pressing topics facing the NHS. From leadership and innovation to patient-centered care and health equity, each session offered new perspectives and ideas to drive positive change. The announcement of league tables has understandably raised concerns about the potential impact on staff morale, particularly for those working in services that may find themselves lower on the rankings. A key theme throughout the conference was the importance of empowering leaders to act autonomously and drive change without needing constant permission. Building a culture where staff can learn by doing, and where people feel safe to try - to learn from their mistakes - is essential. So while accountability is important, it will be crucial that it’s balanced carefully to ensure that our teams feel supported, not undermined, and that the innovation and improvement that is needed, is not stifled through fear of failure and of appearing at the bottom of the rankings. A powerful thread emerged over the 2 days: the significance of top-class leadership at all levels of the NHS. As the 10-Year NHS Plan and the new reforms set out today by Wes Streeting take shape, I hope they will create opportunities to strengthen leadership across our health service. My key takeaways: 🌟A focus on continuous improvement and innovation, and the need to empower our workforce through compassionate leadership. 🌟Recognising that not all change leads to improvement. It’s vital to make room for learning from mistakes without fear of punishment. 🌟The call for patient-centered services that are designed around complex, individual needs. “Power to the patient” means rethinking how we serve. 🌟An investment in leadership is essential. We need values-based, outcomes-focused leadership that truly tackles health inequalities. Harnessing data and disaggregating will help us better understand our populations. 🌟Moving towards an earned autonomy model by trusting leaders to drive change, guiding staff on what to achieve and why rather than dictating how to do it, and fostering an improvement culture. 🌟Leaders need to lead with authenticity and compassion. At the heart of it all is “mattering”, ensuring our staff know their work is meaningful and impactful. 🌟 Prioritising staff wellbeing means not only providing resources but also fostering a culture where our people feel genuinely cared for. NHS England’s Frontline Digitisation programme was introduced in 2021 to support healthcare organisations and patients to have access to digital health service services and the data they need to manage and improve health and wellbeing. Many ICSs have already begun to see benefits including freeing up staff time and encouraging collaborative working with partners. The roll out of Electronic Patient Record (EPR) systems has forced trusts and the wider system to consider bringing clinical and administrative services together, however, transformation like this comes at a cost, and many say they are still not yet ready. In the 'Frontline digitisation: creating the conditions for a digital NHS' report, which we produced with NHS Confederation, ICS leaders told us that workforce and training were significant barriers to providing and delivering a quality frontline digitalised service. To make this work in the long-term healthcare leaders need: ✅ Fewer core targets, with ICS given the autonomy to choose how to deliver them ✅ Flexibility to meet the demands and needs of their local population ✅ Quality training and support for staff ✅ More capital funding for digital infrastructure ✅ Longer-term, multi-year funding cycles Click the link in comments to read the report in full ⬇️ #DigitalHealthcare #FrontlineDigitisation #NHS

Matthew Custance The current system for deciding which/ when/ where to build new hospitals in the UK clearly isn’t working, and needs to change. PFI in my view didn’t work either, as it bundled building, FM and other services into complex contracts and the PFI consortia quickly became good at stealing sweeties from tge kiddies letting contracts. Has anyone done a comparison of the end to end process for planning and building a new public hospital in UK vs a range of other developed countries with either social health insurance or Bevan systems? My hypothesis is that in the UK there is a much greater degree of political and treasury involvement, leading to delays, decisions which are sub-optimal at a local level, and excess time and money spent planning projects.
