Information security has transformed from being a purely technology challenge, to one which affects the future of business. The risks are continually changing, and organisations have to choose whether to accept or to mitigate new and evolving risks. Complacency and denial are no longer options - since every organisation is at threat from both external attacks, internal breach or general user ignorance. As access to data is no longer confined directly to network users, but much more broadly available thanks to mobility, cloud computing and other technology trends organisations need to address their threat posture from varying degrees and sources.

Increasingly frequent news headlines about data breaches, distributed denial of service attacks and hacktivists leveraging social networks have probably made many leaders consider what they would invest in to avoid disaster and the reputational damage that can result. It is a mistake to regard security only in the context of avoidance of risk.
