Latham & Watkins has strengthened its London debt finance team with the hire of a partner from rival US law firm Goodwin. Latham has added Goodwin partner Hugh O'Sullivan in London, James Booth reports. O’Sullivan has acted for private equity firms such as TA Associates, Francisco Partners, TowerBrook Capital Partners L.P. and HIG Capital on financing deals, according to his profile on Goodwin’s website.

Partner Ian Weinstein is quoted in Law360 UK regarding the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) move in November to tone down an earlier plan to publicly name some firms in the early stages of enforcement investigations after the sector and the government resisted. The FCA informed the House of Lords financial services regulation committee last month that it was seeking to bring down the proportion of enforcement cases that end with no action taken, Law360 noted. This is just over half, and the regulator aims to get it to a third. "The FCA has not made it clear why this, in and of itself, is a good thing," Weinstein said. "The FCA seems to be focusing simply on the number of cases that end with no action taken, rather than a more qualitative analysis of whether the right investigations are being opened and pursued." Akin, Gump, Strauss Hauer & Feld has strengthened its London corporate ranks with the addition of a partner from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe. Partner Daniel Wayte, who is set to start at Akin later this month, will sit within the firm’s recently launched global capital solutions team. Wayte, who has been a partner at Orrick since September 2018, has also previously spent time at other elite outfits including Milbank and Slaughter and May, where he spent just short of a decade. Wayte’s practice focuses on capital solutions transactions, principally for private credit and alternative capital investors. Building on its hire of a Linklaters partner last month, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP has recruited a leveraged finance duo from Sidley Austin. The partners joining are Bryan Robson and William Gwyn. They joined Sidley Austin in 2016 from Kirkland & Ellis.
