Add to this the strong financial incentive for authors in some regions of IEEE to publish, the large volume of submissions, and the perception of pay-for-play in open access journals and I expect to see a lot more retractions going forward.

Great to see the UK semiconductor study published: https://lnkd.in/dEmgj5x6 The study was commissioned by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and led by Perspective Economics with support from IfM Engage. It was a pleasure working on this project as the semiconductor expert advisor at the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult. Key findings: while the UK represents around 2% of global semiconductor revenues, the UK has significant strengths in design/IP, R&D and advanced materials. The semiconductor supply chain model was referenced in the recent UKTIN Semiconductor Capability Report, and the taxonomy was adapted for the recent report by the OECD - OCDE Semiconductor Informal Exchange Network. #semiconductors #RandD #design #supplychain

Model robustness for feedback stabilization of open quantum systems by Nina Hadis Amini Abstract: This paper generalizes the results in [30] concerning feedback stabilization of target states for N-level quantum angular momentum systems undergoing quantum non-demolition measurements (QND) in absence of the knowledge about initial states and parameters. Here we consider multiple measurement operators and study the stabilization toward a chosen target subspace which is a common eigenspace of measurement operators. Under the QND conditions, we show that this analysis provides necessary tools to ensure feedback stabilization based on a simplified filter whose state is a N-dimensional vector. A numerical analysis has been proposed in [18]. This paper provides a complete proof for the use of a simplified filter in feedback stabilization. This has important practical use as the dimension of quantum systems is usually high. This paper opens the way toward a complete proof concerning the robustness of a stabilizing feedback with respect to approximate filters, which is lacking.

In a study produced as part of my postdoctoral research at Politecnico di Milano, funded by FAPESP, we report a new study published in *Nature Quantum Information* (2024), showing the high-fidelity generation of 4-photon Greenberg-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states on a chip, a significant breakthrough for all-optical quantum technologies. This work highlights the integration of a bright quantum-dot based single-photon source with a low-loss reconfigurable glass photonic circuit, achieving unprecedented results in on-chip entanglement generation. The paper, titled "High-fidelity four-photon GHZ states on chip", https://lnkd.in/dQfE4ybc, with Fabio Sciarrino, Marco Liscidini, Nadia Belabas, and Roberto Osellame as key contributors. Our research focused on the generation of 4-photon GHZ states using a quantum-dot based single-photon source and a glass photonic circuit. We achieved an experimental fidelity to the target state of 86% and a purity of 76% through full quantum-state tomography. The entanglement was certified using a semi device-independent approach, violating a Bell-like inequality by more than 39 standard deviations. Additionally, we demonstrated a four-partite quantum secret sharing protocol on-chip, achieving a qubit-error rate of 10.87% with a sifted key of up to 1978 bits. These results underscore the potential of quantum-dot technology combined with glass photonic circuitry for scalable and high-rate entanglement generation. The systematic analysis and numerical modeling identified photon indistinguishability as the main factor limiting fidelity. Improvements in voltage source stability, temporal overlap, and polarization control are expected to enhance performance further. Reducing insertion losses and increasing operation rates to at least 500 MHz will also improve fidelity and purity, enabling higher bitrates and lower error rates in quantum protocols. Overall, our findings mark a significant milestone in the integration of quantum-dot based single-photon sources with photonic chips, demonstrating that this platform is mature enough for practical quantum devices. The long-term stability and potential for integrability of our quantum-dot source, combined with the reconfigurable optical elements in our photonic chip, position this technology at the forefront of developing practical photon-based quantum devices.

Tradeoffs When Building and Running Cohort and Patient-Level Markov Simulation Models    In this recent study, written as part of the Horizon Europe-funded Immutol project, experts compared cohort (CH) and patient-level (PL) Markov modeling techniques within a cost-effectiveness analysis framework, which aligns with IMMUTOL’s objective to decrease healthcare costs and enhance patients’ quality of life.    While CH models process average patient cohorts, PL models simulate individual patient pathways, offering greater flexibility but requiring more technical expertise and computational resources. The choice between these modeling approaches is not straightforward, and while numerous conceptual and practical differences have been discussed, understanding the practical trade-offs between them is essential.    The paper was co-authored by Syreon Research Institute colleagues Balázs Nagy, Zoltán Kaló, Rok Hren, and Bertalan Németh who played a key role in designing and evaluating the Markov simulation models.    The study highlights key trade-offs between cohort (CH) and patient-level (PL) approaches, demonstrating how CH models offer stability and transparency, while PL models excel in capturing complex patient pathways and subgroup analyses. These insights – demonstrating the importance of weighing flexibility, detail, and resource optimization when selecting a modeling approach - help refine health economic modeling, supporting Immutol’s broader scientific, economic, and social goals.    Read the full article to explore these practical insights in greater depth:  https://lnkd.in/dJ7Fr_3q      #MarkovModeling #CostEffectiveness #SimulationModels #HealthEconomics #SyreonResearchInstitute #Immutol

When modelling systems, a fairly common scenario is that you have multiple entities which are functionally similar, but slightly different. This could be multiple aircraft engines, subject to manufacturing variability and/or different degradation patterns; wind-turbines in slightly different locations / orientations; smart-meters for similar types of households; multiple individuals in a pattern-of-life model, etc. Hierarchical modelling gives you the opportunity to exploit commonalities across similar entities, while still allowing 'wiggle-room' for individual variability. This approach is particularly advantageous in low-data settings, where you can 'borrow' information from the remaining population. Despite its simplicity, it seems to be an opportunity that is surprisingly missed in industrial settings. This paper, led by Lawrence Bull explores opportunities to apply this model in the context of machinery. Similar work by Pranay Seshadri explored this in the context of aero-engines (https://lnkd.in/d-rEesdS) in collaboration with Rolls Royce. The real challenge in these settings is scaling such approaches up to larger populations, while remaining computationally efficient, which is where recent Stat/ML approaches play a crucial role.

As we enter 2025 the #researchers community have to consider, among other issues, the ways that will assist our society to advance and improve our quality of life without affecting negatively the #sustainability of our environment. New #technologies can assist in that direction. Certainly #Photonics in general and Photonics Integrated Circuits (#PICs) in particular, can play a significant role in this direction. New paper fresh off the press! 😀 In many industrial applications, there is a #fiber #network responsible for water absorption and liquid transport, thus operating under partly saturated conditions. #Xray #microtomography is a way of illustrating the details of the transport through the porous structure during compression. However, if the fibers have the same X-ray attenuation as the water, this becomes more complicated. With deep appreciation for his thoughtful post and comments on The Quantum Record's recent piece on the observer effect, I want to call attention to Rohan Light's profound insights on the physical, mathematical, and semantic value of data, the dimensionality of value, and the risks of causeless correlations. Trading in data is a major portion of the world's economic activity, whether it's direct trading by data brokers or trading in a handful of technology companies that account for more than $10 trillion of market value. While the current value of data continues to skyrocket, there's a risk that its future potential could become debased when data is cut into too many irreconcilable fractions. Rational data governance is essential to the preservation of data's value.
