End of Day UK #Energy Market Update – 05/09/2024 The UK energy markets saw a notable rebound today, ending a three-day losing streak across Power and Gas prices. Front-month UK Power closed at £74.25/MWh, up by 1.71%, while the front-month NBP Gas contract saw an increase of 1.79%, closing at 87.52p/therm. This uptick comes after a period of downward pressure, likely driven by the recent cooler weather forecasts and improved wind generation across Europe. Gas prices, which had been in decline, regained momentum following Russian President Vladimir Putin's comments, indicating that Russia remains willing to supply gas to Europe through Gazprom. However, with Europe's firm stance on reducing dependency on Russian gas, concerns are mounting over potential supply constraints post-New Year, as the transit agreement via Ukraine is set to expire. Further out on the curve, Q1 2025 Power prices increased by 1.95%, closing at £82.36/MWh, while Gas contracts for the same period rose by 2.04%, finishing at 94.67p/therm. The UK's renewable energy markets are at a crucial turning point. #GreatBritishEnergy has the potential to be a major catalyst for the UK's clean energy transition. Alongside the #NationalWealthFund, its focus on partnering with private developers is encouraging, but it needs to go hand in glove with measures to address wider economy barriers. Already removing the de-facto planning ban on onshore wind is a statement of intent from the new government, but it is only part of the solution. We know funds are looking to #invest in Britain's #sustainable future, but to do so, they need streamlined planning processes, grid upgrades that mean they can plug in their projects, and long-term certainty on pricing mechanisms, such as Contracts for Difference. Targeted capital aimed at de-risking projects in areas facing constraint – through the likes of the National Wealth Fund and GB Energy – alongside this wider economy reform, can position the UK as a global leader in clean energy investment and innovation.

What is GB Energy ⚡ and why it's important for the startup ecosystem? GB Energy is the Keir Starmer and the new UK 🇬🇧 government (The Labour Party) renewable initiative: a new state-owned energy company to accelerate renewable energy. The government will invest £8.3bn 💷 into GB Energy over the next 5️⃣ years, with the intention to mobilize £60bn of private capital to the company as well. That money will go into both large and smaller scale energy projects. When we think of such an initiative, it would not only be to build new wind 🌬 power projects, but they will invest in Nuclear, CDR, Hydrogen economy, storage and more. It's important to understand what GB Energy is not ❌ - it's NOT a venture fund, and it will invest in projects mainly, and later stage and established projects. It will not invest in a new LDES tech company, so probably a seed-stage company would not get a direct investment but the likes of Greg Jackson and Octopus Energy, and will feed growth investors such as Lightrock (Pal Erik Sjatil). What it can do? it could accelerate, mainly everything in our climate ecosystem and not only in the UK, but globally. Although it is state owned, it will operate as a private business, so the push for execution and revenues is as a private company. In fact, what we should do is think about the use cases where we get stuck: grid connections, off-takes, permits all of those are things that GB Energy can accelerate - it's the UK version's IRA (but better?). If there is one thing that I have learned working with startups to leverage the IRA, in areas from hydrogen to CDR, is that it's still slow 🐢 , vague and complicated. You have to work to find a corporate parter, make the joint application, and all that jazz. If I could think of one thing GB Energy should do, is bring the startup community from day 1️⃣ to the table to work together. Forming an advisory group of investors and founders and build a team that could also bridge the large projects with the smaller companies, and the breakthrough technologies. That could not wait, for year 3 of this initiative, to build the right mechanisms to integrate innovation that would scale faster and allow them to integrate quicker to the grid. That will give a competitive advantage to the UK globally 🌏 in the climate tech space, and build the UK as the hub for both hardware and software startup companies to come to the UK and build in climate tech. UK natural gas prices rose slightly, with the NBP Day-Ahead contract settling at 97.80 pence per therm, a 2 pence increase from the previous session. This upward movement is partially attributed to ongoing unplanned maintenance at Norway's Troll gas field, as well as planned maintenance at other facilities. Total exit nominations have now reached over 300 million cubic meters per day, but despite bullish factors like strong Medium Range Storage injections and increased gas demand for power, market fundamentals remain largely bearish. Norwegian imports to the UK are flowing at 58 million cubic meters per day, while temperatures are forecasted to drop below seasonal averages starting 9th October, which could shift demand in the coming days. UK power prices have also experienced some volatility, with the Day-Ahead baseload price falling to £76.24 per MWh, a decrease of over £7 compared to the previous session. However, forward contracts, particularly for Q1-25, saw increases as prices for Nov-24, Dec-24, and Jan-25 edged up. The gas market’s influence, coupled with geopolitical tensions, continues to play a key role in shaping short-term price movements. Wind speeds are expected to remain above seasonal averages, except for the weekend, which could alleviate some of the pressure on power prices. On the global stage, Brent crude oil saw a modest increase, reaching $78.05 per barrel, reflecting market reactions to heightened geopolitical risks in the Middle East and Ukraine. Coal prices for delivery in 2025 also surged to $127.79 per tonne, a sharp rise of nearly $5 as uncertainties in global supply chains persist. Meanwhile, EU carbon prices have dropped to a six-month low, standing at €62.05 per tonne, amid strong renewable energy output, reduced liquefied natural gas consumption, and macroeconomic concerns. Currency fluctuations have remained relatively stable, with the GBP/EUR exchange rate moving slightly to 1.1942 and GBP/USD holding steady at 1.3116. Looking ahead, the UK system remains 30 million cubic meters per day short as we start the week, with three LNG cargoes expected by 18th October. Windspeeds and temperatures are forecasted to fluctuate, potentially impacting both gas and power markets. This decline reflects robust storage levels, nearing seasonal capacity, along with steady Norwegian flows and recent LNG deliveries that kept supply strong. Norway’s daily flows reached 337 million cubic meters, and another LNG shipment is expected in the coming week, ensuring ample gas supply to offset increasing demand as temperatures fall. In the power market, UK DA baseload power prices experienced a sharp reduction, settling at £92.49/MWh. The power sector’s decline is partly linked to softer gas prices and the return of the Torness 1 nuclear reactor, which is back online and contributing an additional 0.6 GW of capacity to the grid. Although the recent weaker winds have temporarily increased the reliance on gas-fired generation, forecasted wind speeds are set to normalise by next week, potentially reducing the need for gas burn as wind power generation picks up again. This movement came as the market reacted to slight revisions in the Nordic maintenance schedule, which eased some of the pressure on supply expectations. Natural Gas (NBP) experienced a more significant drop, with front-month prices falling by 4.08% to 91.39p. The spike was largely driven by processing issues at the Gullfaks field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and low liquidity across European hubs. Despite a projected decrease in demand by 7 mcm/day, supply constraints continue to tighten the market, particularly with upcoming maintenance on Norwegian assets expected to further limit output. Looking ahead, NBP contracts for September 2024 slightly edged up to 96.13 p/therm, while Q4-2024 and Q1-2025 contracts saw marginal declines, highlighting ongoing concerns about geopolitical risks and the approaching winter season. Power Market: UK day-ahead power prices dropped to £54.94/MWh, reflecting a £9.30/MWh decrease. The market experienced mixed movements, with short-term contracts witnessing gains and seasonal contracts mostly declining. ESNZ Committee looking forward to exploring ideas with GB Energy about its role in the race for clean energy.   On Wednesday 20 November the newly reappointed Energy Security and Net Zero Committee will hold its first public evidence session in Parliament, looking at the role that Great British Energy (GBE) is expected to play in the energy market.     The flagship publicly-owned energy company, “designed to drive clean energy deployment, boost energy independence, create jobs” was announced with an initial £8 billion budget to 2029 as part of major new Government commitments on achieving clean energy.     But with only £100 million earmarked for investment in renewables in the next two years, questions have already been raised about the impact it can have on the Government’s 2030 clean energy target.   The Committee will question the new Chair of GBE Professor Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng. Director at GBE Tim Cullen recently admitted that it is not yet clear how the remit of GBE to invest in clean power projects and infrastructure will sit alongside a newly created National Wealth Fund. One of the questions from the select committee on Wednesday will be whether it is being setup in an appropriate way to achieve its ambitions without distorting existing investment.   Will it learn the lessons from previous UK and current EU state-owned companies and be able to drive private investment? Will it have an impact on the core aim of lowering consumer energy bills?     The Committee will also question the Chair at Great British Nuclear (GBN), another publicly owned company, established only about a year ago with the remit to “drive the delivery of new nuclear energy projects in the UK” and contribute to meeting the UK’s legally binding 2050 target for a net zero economy.

Strong exports to the continent continue, incentivised by the NBP Day-Ahead discount to TTF. The NBP Day-Ahead price is up slightly, trading at 79.50 p/therm. On the curve, winter contracts remain firm, with continued focus on storage injections ahead of the winter season. Pan-European storage levels are strong, with a collective fill rate of 89.40%. Power Market: UK power prices are seeing mixed movements. The UK Day-Ahead Baseload is priced at £64.24/MWh, reflecting a slight firmness. However, renewable generation, particularly from wind, is expected to limit the need for gas-fired power this week, especially on Thursday, with forecasts showing up to 15,000 MWh/h of wind capacity.
