Critics argue the issue is political uncertainty, trade confusion, capital shortages, and lack of industrial policy, not executive pay. So, who is right? Last week we held a lively debate, within our UK and Ireland team, on the topic of what a Labour victory in the upcoming UK election might mean for our market projections.     My key take-aways: - There's a sizeable gap between some of the targets set out in the Labour manifesto and our central Reference Case scenario. - Lots of discussion on how we should (or shouldn't) factor ambitious top-down targets, and ideas like GB Energy which are so far nebulous in the public sphere, into our bottom-up fundamentals modelling. - Historically, manifesto pledges have a mixed record when faced with the reality of government. We looked at some compelling examples from the previous general election in 2019. - the barriers which exist today will still exist on July 5th (election results day) and it will take time for the detail of new policy to emerge and the impact to become clear.   Finally, the debate format proved to be great fun and uncovered some hidden talent in the team. The Diversity Project - Investment Industry has commissioned a groundbreaking study led by Professor Alex Edmans FBA FAcSS from London Business School to explore the link between cognitive diversity and team performance in the investment industry. Following criticism of existing studies* claiming a linkage between demographic diversity and financial performance. Given questions raised over both the robustness of the methodologies and replicability of these studies’ results, the Diversity Project - Investment Industry Project decided to re-examine the ‘business case’ for diversity, focusing on diversity of thought. Specifically, there is very limited, if any, academic work exploring the linkage between cognitive diversity and investment performance. The research will delve into: - Diversity of Thought: Does diversity in viewpoints and experiences enhance investment performance? - When Diversity Works: Identifying specific situations where cognitive diversity is a strength - or a challenge. - Inclusive Dynamics: How firms can foster team environments that amplify the benefits of cognitive diversity. This work will deliver actionable insights, helping firms reimagine their approach to hiring, team building, and creating cultures where all perspectives are valued.
