The team's been busy this week with local dealer partner Stuarts Truck and Bus and Stagecoach South West in Devon, conducting engineer training and familiarisation with our Volvo BZL Electric demonstrator. 👀🔋 This is in advance of 20 Volvo BZL Electric 10.8m single deck buses entering service later this year. These ZEBRA 2-funded buses (Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas) are the result of a joint bid to the Department for Transport by Stagecoach Bus and Devon County Council. Gatwick Hoppa Ltd has taken delivery of three new Volvo B8RLE MCV eVoRa buses to operate a 24/7 service carrying passengers from four major hotels surrounding London Gatwick, to both North and South terminals. The new 11.3m single deck buses represent the first Volvos to join the growing Gatwick Hoppa fleet, helping to meet increased demand for hotel transfers and a continued uplift in airport passenger numbers. Kiran Suresh, Managing Director of Gatwick Hoppa, says: “We were looking to grow the fleet, and there was a firm preference from management for the Volvo brand. The eVoRa is a proven product for airport operations, and in the specification we’ve selected, we’re confident this is the best vehicle for our customers. Commencing this spring, Volvo Buses is to trial a new technology which will enable buses to drive independently into and out of bus stops. 🚍🛣️ The support system is designed primarily to reduce the stress on drivers, but also to lower the environmental impact of the buses and increase safety and comfort for passengers. Joakim Jonsson, who is leading the project for Volvo Buses, says: "Although fully self-driving buses without safety drivers in public transport systems are a thing of the far distant future, with the help of this type of new technology we can add value in a number of areas today. For example, we hope to be able to minimise the monotonous tasks that drivers have to carry out, which will improve their working environment. "The new technology can also help to reduce wear and damage to the buses, make travelling more comfortable for passengers and increase road safety." To support the rollout of new Volvo BZL Electric buses in the Northwest, our dealer partner, Thomas Hardie Commercials Ltd, has been busy growing its team. Matthew Halliday, the dealer's Group Aftermarket Manager, explains: "We have increased our Frontline Technicians to 13. Every technician has been trained to the highest standard in electric vehicles and we have also heavily invested in special tooling. These steps were taken to support the product and the customers."
