The process of replacing a founder or an early-stage CEO is rarely straightforward. It’s a complex and often emotional journey. It requires managing multiple stakeholders, navigating legal challenges and cultural difficulties. Leadership transitions often revolve around three primary considerations: money, equity and reputation. Reputation is often the one that is overlooked but it plays an incredibly important role in maintaining trust with shareholders and key stakeholders including the board, investors and employees. 📉 Q4 2024 Venture Financing Trends 📈 Cooley LLP’s latest report shows deal count and invested capital dipped from Q3, but valuations rose across Series A, B, and C. Notably: Series C saw the biggest jump, with deal count more than doubling. 🔹 Down rounds, as a percentage of deals, declined to 19% (still high though!), while up rounds hit 80%—the highest since Q3 2022. 🔹 Pay-to-play provisions hit 9.3%, an all-time high. 🔹 Tech financings saw a slight increase in deals but a significant drop in invested capital. 🔹 Life sciences deal count and capital also dipped, with tranche structures rising.
