Unilever is putting smallholders front and centre of our work to maintain a deforestation-free, sustainable palm oil supply chain. Independent mills and smallholder farmers are important stewards of the land. In Indonesia and Malaysia, they account for as much as 40% of the total area for palm oil production. By evolving our sourcing strategy in these countries to include direct sourcing, and providing training to boost knowledge, skills and opportunities, we aim to improve the availability of traceable and deforestation-free palm oil while increasing yields and livelihoods.
