We can be so focused on UK capital market reform it’s easy to miss what else is happening around the world. I am catching up on Singapore’s recent set of measures to strengthen its equities market, which includes: A £3bn central bank injection into Singaporean equities; Tax rebates for new primary listings and tax exemptions on fund managers’ qualifying income if they substantially invest domestically; The expansion of an existing grant scheme that supports greater research coverage, so that more pre-IPO and smallcaps are written about. Don’t get me wrong: London has a unique ecosystem to support small and mid-sized companies. The reform agenda here continues apace. And the SGX Group does not compete with London for companies as closely as many other trading venues. But meaningful investment, pulling the right tax levers and supporting equity research are all things we have to get right if we want London to be the world’s capital of growth capital. Three cheers for three of The Quoted Companies Alliance members this Friday. Neuroscience group Cambridge Cognition announced its involvement in one of the world’s largest brain health studies, which is sponsored by Biogen in collaboration with Apple. Saffron Walden’s LPA GROUP Plc won a £1.7m contract to supply a major UK-based train builder with rail inter-car jumpers – electronic components that run connections between carriages. And jewellery retailer, pawnbroker and travel money specialist Ramsdens Financial Limited reported continued strong trading, helped by the high gold price. The Teesside-headquartered business operates 169 UK stores.
