🌟 Volunteer spotlight 🌟 The University of Edinburgh PHD student Rashi Krishna started volunteering with us last term. Here's a snapshot of Rashi’s experience: 1️⃣ “When I started my PhD, I knew I wanted to do something outside of academia that felt meaningful.” 2️⃣ “I found Literacy Pirates—a flexible, online volunteering opportunity where I could help young people develop their reading and writing skills.” 3️⃣ “The sign-up process was straightforward, especially as I was able to filter the opportunities for online only. Once I registered interest, the Literacy Pirates team was really supportive... Since it was online, I could volunteer once a week without the stress of travel, which was really important for me.” 4️⃣ "One of the best moments was when a student gave me a shoutout at the end of a session—it was a small thing, but it meant a lot." Signing up to volunteer with us is easy! About us
The Literacy Pirates (formerly known as The Hackney Pirates) is an innovative charity working to develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of children aged 9-12 years old, so that they achieve both in school and in the world beyond. While socio-economic background continues to be a major determinant of educational attainment, we know that some children will need extra help to achieve their full potential. We provide a year-long, after-school learning programme for children referred by their school because they are falling behind and have fewer opportunities in their personal lives. We support outside of school, so children can do better in the classroom. We believe that learning should be a great adventure! So working together with local schools, families and volunteers to deliver a weekly learning programme and unique real-world learning projects in our own unconventional learning environments, Ships in Haringey and Hackney. The children, Young Pirates, come to our Ships once a week after-school – it is a weird and wonderful out-of-school learning environment complete with secret passageways, an underwater cave and a ship’s cat. Young people receive adult support on their reading. We also work on unique creative publishing projects, where young people work with professionals to write their own books, audio and website projects. All our creative products give young people the chance to practise their writing skills and feel a sense of achievement at seeing a whole project through to publication. You can see some of their work on our website.

Thank you to University of Nottingham for hosting a brilliant panel discussion this week as part of their ‘Finding Work Experience Week’ in the School of Psychology. It was great to see such a good turn out and have the opportunity to talk to students about #volunteering with us! University students make up a large part of our volunteer community and we are so grateful for the time they dedicate to Young Pirates amongst their busy study schedules. The feedback we get from student volunteers is consistently positive so it's brilliant to have opportunities like this panel event to spread the word among more undergraduates! If you’re a student and looking to gain experience working with young people and to build transferable skills, why not consider signing up to volunteer with us? #studentvolunteeringweek #workwithus #thoughtleadership

Shiver me timbers! We are delighted to have received a £30,000 grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation. This grant will make a significant contribution to the cost of delivering our online learning programme – the Virtual Ship, as we embark on a digital voyage to support more children across London to develop their literacy to succeed at school and beyond. A huge thank you to the Garfield Weston Foundation on behalf of the entire Literacy Pirates crew and, most importantly, the Young Pirates we work with. #fundraising #grantgiving #literacy #educationcharity

Yesterday, I attended the BETT Conference, the world’s biggest EdTech event with over 30,000 visitors and hundreds of exhibitions and speakers. It was HUGE! A super exciting and buzzy day 1 to the event, providing a great opportunity to learn about the latest trends in EdTech and AI. The key takeaways for me were: 1️⃣ AI is here – Teacher Tapp tells us that 70% of teachers surveyed are using it! The next step is focusing on the human skills that will help us use AI effectively. 2️⃣ AI will reshape education in ways we can’t fully predict yet – even the experts are still figuring out the full scope of its impact. 3️⃣ If AI is going to make it easier for learners to acquire knowledge and complete tasks without direct teacher instruction, we’ll need to place even greater value on meaningful human interactions and nurturing an intrinsic love of learning. This aligns perfectly with our The Literacy Pirates approach, which emphasises those critical social connections that help to spark a lifelong love of reading and writing. Great to see how AI and education are evolving together – and I’m excited for what comes next! #EdTech #BETT2025 #FutureOfLearning #EdTechInnovation #LiteracyPirates

Starter Libraries for Young Readers 🚀 Did you know that 40% of the Young Pirates we work with have fewer than 10 books at home, and 2% have no books at all? Studies show that the more books a child owns, the better their reading outcomes, academic success, and even future earning potential. This term, thanks to the incredible efforts of Misha and Francesco, two pupils from St Paul's School in London, we're sending a starter library of 3 books to 150 Young Pirates, giving them the tools they need to succeed. Read all about the initiative: https://lnkd.in/ez9WGbwx Huge thanks to Misha and Francesco for raising the funds and packing the books to get this initiative off the ground! #Access #BooksForAll #Education #LiteracyMatters #ReadingForSuccess #PartnershipsForTheGoals
