Today's Financial Times reports on the newly formed UK Infinity Fusion Consortium between Type One Energy, Tokamak Energy, and AECOM to develop the first private-sector-led fusion power plant project in the UK. It combines Type One Energy's 400 MWe Infinity Two stellarator design, AECOM's engineering capabilities, and Tokamak Energy's HTS magnet technology and UK manufacturing expertise. The consortium's aim now is to develop a fusion project that is commercially credible, deployable using existing enabling technologies, and capable of attracting private capital — consistent with the long-term goals of the government’s recently announced UK Fusion Strategy. The project complements STEP Fusion and builds UK supply chain capability. When? The US Infinity Two project in Tennessee is targeting commercial operation in 2034. This UK project can be a fast follower in the mid 2030s and help unlock a new form of limitless, clean energy.

On Monday, the Fusion Energy APPG hosted Lord Patrick Vallance, Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear, for a parliamentary briefing event on the Government's newly published Fusion Strategy. Chaired by Daniel Mosley (Lord Ravensdale), the session looked at how the UK moves from world-leading fusion research to real-world commercial deployment, and what's needed to get there. We also heard from the UK Atomic Energy Authority on its new 2026-2030 fusion roadmap, and from UK Fusion Energy on its role as the national fusion systems integrator delivering STEP Fusion at West Burton. Here are the three key takeaways from the session: • The UK has a clear joined-up approach between the Government, UKAEA and UKFE, positioning the UK as a global leader in commercial fusion energy. • Fusion energy has shifted from research to delivery, with STEP Fusion construction planned and supply chains being lined up. • Investment is being mobilised with the Government's upcoming Fusion Investment Prospectus and market framework, which will give confidence to investors and the supply chain. The APPG will continue to play a role in supporting dialogue between Parliamentarians and industry as fusion energy moves towards commercial reality.
