🧠⚙️ AI ambition means little without compute power to match it. The UK’s AI ecosystem is brimming with world-class talent and ideas, but without serious infrastructure, that ambition risks going unrealised. Yesterday’s Compute Strategy is an overdue move to close the gap. Backed by £1 billion, it lays the groundwork for a sovereign, scalable compute network – the kind needed to power breakthroughs in biotech, climate, materials and more. What’s in focus: ⚡ A national AI supercomputing network is now live – linking Isambard-AI and Dawn - and is set to grow 20x by 2030 📍 Edinburgh will host the UK’s first National Supercomputing Centre, with regional AI Growth Zones in Scotland and Wales to follow 🔬 A new AI for Science strategy will target high-impact research across biosciences, materials and advanced computing This isn’t just a hardware play. It’s about ensuring the UK remains a place where startups can train frontier models, where corporates can prototype, and where science isn’t bottlenecked by access. The regional focus is crucial: Edinburgh, Scotland and Wales have a real opportunity to become leading hubs for AI innovation – if the right private partnerships, skilled talent, and infrastructure converge. At full capacity, the UK’s public compute will be able to process in one second what it would take the global population 80 years to do manually. That’s the kind of scale UK tech needs to lead the global AI race.
