Last Friday we were thrilled to welcome to campus the Future Digital Economy Minister, Baroness Jones, who praised the groundbreaking quantum technology research taking place at the University of Sussex. During her visit, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) Minister met with Professor Winfried Hensinger, Director of the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies (SCQT) and co-founder of spin-out company Universal Quantum, to learn about the University's pioneering work in quantum computing and its role in driving forward the UK’s technological and economic future. Baroness Jones highlighted how innovation hubs like ours are crucial for pushing boundaries in emerging technologies, from health diagnostics to cybersecurity, while boosting the economy and improving lives. She also praised the SCQT’s efforts in transforming world-leading research into successful spin-out companies like Universal Quantum that attract investment and create jobs across the UK. One of the most exciting initiatives discussed during the event, which was also attended by Bella Sankey, leader of Brighton & Hove City Council and Chair of the Greater Brighton Economic Board, was the vision of the University and Greater Brighton to turn the region into the UK's own 'Quantum Silicon Valley'. 🌱Giving back and getting stuck in!🌱 Last Friday, our Sussex Innovation team spent the day volunteering at The Grace Eyre Foundation's allotment - clearing brambles, laying paths, and removing weeds to help create a welcoming space for individuals with learning disabilities, autism, and mental health conditions. Grace Eyre is dedicated to empowering people with learning disabilities to live independent and active lives through housing, employment, skills development, and people-centered community projects like this one.
