We are joining partners involved in the Sheffield Beaver Study to welcome the Environmental Secretary announcement on Friday (February 28) that the release of native Eurasian beavers back into English waterways is to be permitted for the first time in centuries. Sheffield City Council was recently awarded £96,725 to look at the possibility of reintroducing beavers into Sheffield or surrounding areas. The funding, secured from the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, is enabling the Council to work with neighbouring local authorities and agencies such as Natural England and Environment Agency to gain a greater understanding of the benefits that beavers have on local landscapes. The news is welcomed by the team carrying out beaver feasibility work here in Sheffield, who are exploring the benefits of both reintroduction with enclosures or wild release. As we continue our mission to clean up Sheffield’s air, we’ve launched a new £11.3million fund to help bus companies electrify their fleet. It follows on from our incredibly successful and free Sheffield Connect services, which more of you are taking advantage of each day to get around the city centre.

Graves Park Animal Farm welcomed an adorable new addition recently, with the birth of a new baby llama, known as a cria. The three-week-old was born at the end of January to mum, Nancy, and joins two siblings called Lettuce and Humus. We are now calling out for locals to name this newborn, which can be done via a post on the Graves Park Animal Farm Facebook page, and we cannot wait to see what you come up with! https://lnkd.in/e6Gdwykr

Sheffield City Council wishes to pay its utmost respects to one of the city’s foremost business and civic leaders after learning of the sad passing of Dame Julie Kenny last week. Dame Julie was a huge figure in the life of this city having been born here, and an inspirational leader across our city and region. Many benefitted from her tireless work across the whole of South Yorkshire. She led an enormous range of significant projects that have left a lasting legacy across Sheffield and South Yorkshire, everyone who had the privilege to work with her is devastated at this news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dame Julie’s husband and children, her family and friends at this sad time.

Plans to develop a new International Strategy have been approved this week, aiming to support the Sheffield Growth Plan and other city ambitions. The new plan will focus on economic growth, attracting international investment and boosting Sheffield’s visitor economy, amongst other things. Proposals for the work come following two years of activity including the adoption of the Partner City Policy and ongoing work to establish international links. This was demonstrated recently with a Sheffield delegation visiting sister city, Pittsburgh, last month. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/emZeHsgj

With around 11,000 unpaid carers, around 7,000 young carers, and many more people who contribute to social care support in Sheffield, it was so important we came together to honour and recognise their outstanding contribution to our city. Sheffield’s carers were celebrated last night (13 February 2025) at the Sheffield Cares Excellence Awards, for the care and support that they give to the people of Sheffield. Hosted by Sheffield City Council’s Adult Health and Social Care team, the awards ceremony highlighted the dedication of some of the city’s most skilled and dedicated carers. Cllr Angela Argenzio said: "It was inspiring to hear about what they do for others at the ceremony, and it reminded all of us how essential their role is every day all over the city. We are so grateful for the huge difference they make to so many people’s lives." Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e4C7Vm-n
