The number of children living in conflict has doubled since 1990. Today 473 million children are living in conflict zones⚠️ The prolonged exposure to war and uncertainty means that many children are in a state of ‘toxic stress’. Children in Ukraine, the DRC, Gaza and many other countries ravaged by conflict share the same experiences of loss, destruction and could have lifelong implications on their physical and psychological wellbeing. Here are 5 ways conflict impacts children's mental health: 1️⃣ Anxiety, loneliness and insecurity - it can lead to bed wetting, difficulty falling asleep, nightmares and strained relationships with their loved ones. 2️⃣ Emotional Withdrawal - to cope with violence children become desensitised and emotionally numb, which increases the possibility of them imitating the aggressive behaviour they witness. This can affect their ability to build successful relationships with others. 3️⃣ Aggression - children can become more aggressive, including fighting and shouting at their friends and family or even bullying other children. 4️⃣ Psychosomatic symptoms - severe distress can have physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, chest pains, difficulty breathing, speech impediments and even partial amnesia. 5️⃣ Self-harm - sadly in some instances children see no other option than to escape their surroundings by turning to the use of drugs and alcohol or even self-harm and suicide. Through mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) and education programmes, Save the Children has been able to help children better cope with their experiences. War is no stranger for six-year-old Artem* from Kharkiv, Ukraine. He knows what it means to live under constant threat💔 His city is regularly targeted by missiles and drones, making it too dangerous for children to attend school. But education cannot wait📚 ⚠️ To ensure children can continue learning in the face of war, Kharkiv has set up underground metro schools—safe spaces where kids can receive in-person lessons, interact with friends, and regain a sense of normalcy. Artem has been attending one of these metro schools. He says he loves it because he can finally play with his friends again❤️ At Save the Children, we’ve supported over 259,000 children in Ukraine with access to education. We have: ✅Set up Digital Learning Centres ✅Built 750 protective shelters in frontline areas ✅Repaired schools and kindergartens ✅Provided essential school supplies, including tablets, laptops, and learning kits. Education is a lifeline for children in emergencies. Every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and build a future—no matter the circumstances. Today is the last day of a five-day polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, marking the third vaccine campaign in seven months. We are working hard to support the provision of polio vaccines for over 590,000 children under the age of 10 at two health centres in Deir Al-Balah and Khan Younis. Thousands of children have missed out on essential vaccines, are malnourished, and living in dire conditions. Many are struggling with life-threatening injuries and traumatic stress. And while these vaccines will save lives, they can't undo the damage already done. The only thing that will truly safeguard children's health and futures is a definitive ceasefire. 📷 Photos taken in September 2024

Around the world, children face a convergence of crises from poverty to conflict and natural disasters. Children’s needs cannot be paused, particularly when 1 in 11 children globally already need lifesaving humanitarian assistance. A pause in aid means that children will suffer more than they already are. Throughout Save the Children’s history, we’ve risen to new challenges. Strengthened by your support, we’re resilient and determined to do whatever it takes for children. We owe children a brighter future than they are facing now. When you give them a chance, they can change the world. And that's a future worth fighting for.

Three years of full-scale war in Ukraine has shattered children’s lives. Children have lost their lives and sense of safety. They’ve lost their emotional wellbeing. They’ve lost their chance to learn and connect with friends. They live in fear as air raid alerts, drones and explosions consume the world around them. From children living on the frontline of the war to the 3.66 million people that have been internally displaced, the scale of loss is catastrophic. Working closely with around 25 partners, we are providing life-saving assistance such as food and water, cash transfers, and safe spaces, to make sure children and families impacted by this crisis have the support they need. Since 24 February 2022, our team in Ukraine has reached more than 3.8 million people — including around 1.47 million children.❤️ We've also reached more than 800,000 people including 300,000 children in Poland, Lithuania and Romania. We must keep working together for as long as it takes to save a generation of children and to help them recover and rebuild their lives. Tomorrow, it will be three years since a full-scale war in Ukraine changed the lives of 7.5 million children forever. ➡️ 1.5 million children are at risk of PTSD and depression ➡️ 1.2 million children are missing out on full-time, in-person learning ➡️ More than 2,500 children have been killed or injured For the estimated 1.9 million children that remain in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, they now face a dangerous and uncertain future. What is clear is that children are suffering the most in this brutal war, and urgent action is needed to stop them falling through the cracks. #StopTheWarOnChildren

This is the moment Mariam*, 23, a Save the Children staff member working in Gaza, was reunited with her family after being displaced from the north of Gaza. However, the nightmare is not over. Thousands of children in Gaza are facing malnutrition and disease after 15 months of conflict, with the amount of aid available nowhere near enough to meet the enormous needs. The destruction of #Gaza itself – homes, communities, and the environment – has also left them without safe spaces to grow up and develop. Children must be protected. Working with local partners, we are: 🔴 Delivering lifesaving aid, such as food, water, and essential hygiene supplies to families. 🔴 Managing cases of at-risk children, providing protection and connecting them with the support they need to stay safe. 🔴 Giving cash to families to help them meet their needs. 🔴 Creating child-friendly spaces and learning centres to help children recover and continue their education. Help us rebuild childhoods in Gaza and donate to our Child Emergency Fund👉 https://bit.ly/4k65wyv

"My children have lost loved ones, friends, and their sense of security. But now, we're finally back in the only home they've ever known." These are the words of Nadeen*, a Save the Children staff member in #Gaza who is finally returning to the home she was displaced from with her husband and four children. Children and their families in Gaza need support more than ever⚠️ Alongside local partners, we’re distributing vital supplies to families across shelters and households - drinking water, food, hygiene products, mattresses, blankets, learning materials, toys, and games.❤️ Your support makes this work possible. Donate to help us reach more children living in crisis in Gaza and around the world👉 https://bit.ly/4b7yJow

Children lose everything when a crisis hits. What would you take if you had to flee your home in a matter of seconds? 💔 Clothes, your phone, documents? But what about what you can't save? Enough food or clean water. Your job, an income and a sense of security. Your education. Healthcare. All of this is what we are here for. With your support, we provide children what they need to recover and rebuild their futures. This year, we’re aiming to reach approximately 20.8 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, including 12.5 million children, across 46 countries ❤️ Help us reach more children caught up in emergencies👉 https://lnkd.in/erXmeAE4
