Seaweed, not plastic in your laundry pods! It’s estimated that over 20 billion plastic laundry and dishwasher pods are used every year. We understand how convenient these pods are, but are these traditional laundry and dishwasher pods safe for the environment? The film that dissolves in the wash is made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a plastic that dissolves in water but isn’t biodegradable. A study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health shows that over 75% of intact plastic particles from laundry and dishwasher pods can be released into oceans, rivers, canals and soil. In wastewater, this plastic film has the potential to absorb dangerous chemicals or contaminants, antibiotics, or heavy metals at high concentrations and then work their way up the food chain. PlantSea is working towards giving consumers more choice: films made out of Seaweed, so you can chose a more environmentally-friendly option. #seaweed #seaweedpackaging #laundrypods #laundry #plantsea #packaginginnovation #sustainable #sustainablepackaging #dishwasherpod #choicesmatter #plastic #plasticfree

We make plastic-free alternatives from Seaweed.
About us
Millions of tonnes of plastic are manufactured each year. These materials are often petroleum-based and responsible for large-scale environmental damage and greenhouse gas emissions. Many are unrecyclable and reach the end of life after one use. Once discarded, this plastic sits for centuries in landfill or drifts through our oceans. At PlantSea, we aim to replace these environmentally damaging plastics with sustainable and biodegradable alternatives.

In this episode of Road to Forest Valley, we spoke with Rhiannon Rees, CEO and founder of PlantSea, about how seaweed is shaping the future of sustainable materials. What started as a beachside experiment has turned into an innovative solution - creating a fully biodegradable, water-soluble plastic alternative from seaweed. PlantSea’s solution addresses plastic pollution at its source, offering a safer, nature-based replacement for traditional PVA plastics used in home care, cosmetics, and packaging. With growing demand from major brands, Rhiannon and the PlantSea team are scaling up to bring this material to market. A little bit of fun... I had some seaweed paper offcuts from the Science Owl sustainable gift tags we sold over Christmas. Instead of throwing them out, I got creative and made some art! 🎨 This little piece is now happily displayed in my living room. Waste materials don't need to be wasted! ----- For more like this, follow Science Owl here and on Instagram (@scienceowledu)
