  • Open Cosmos kicks off first Rideshare mission for the European Commission’s IOD/IOV programme In January this year, Open Cosmos was selected as part of the In-Orbit Demonstration and Validation (IOD/IOV) programme funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe R&I Programme. Today, we move from selection to execution, officially starting our first rideshare service under this programme. “We are incredibly enthusiastic about this partnership with the EU and ESA supporting the fast validation of new European technologies, as part of our mission of making space more accessible”, said Rafel Jordà Siquier, CEO of Open Cosmos. Open Cosmos will deliver the first rideshare service to Luso Space, providing end-to-end support to the company on demonstrating and validating in-orbit new satellite technologies. • Wildfires in the Castelo de Paiva region of Portugal spread rapidly last week, joining a larger blaze that began in nearby Arouca. Over 700 firefighters were involved in the response, supported by aerial and ground teams across the region. Our satellites captured the area after the fire, providing a clear view of the damage and burned landscape. Earth observation plays a key role in wildfire monitoring - from detecting active fires to supporting recovery and planning. At Open Cosmos, we work to make this data accessible to those who need it most. open-cosmos.com #OpenCosmos #EarthObservation #PortugalWildfires #SatelliteData #WildfireMonitoring

  • Our satellites have captured the impact of recent wildfires in the province of Ávila, where more than 2500 hectares of forest and farmland have burned. These events affect local communities, ecosystems and contribute to the wider climate crisis. The images show the area before and after the fires, highlighting how quickly landscapes can change. Satellite data plays a key role in understanding and responding to wildfires. It helps detect fires early, track their spread, assess the damage, and support recovery efforts. By providing reliable and frequent information, Earth observation can help inform better decisions on the ground. At Open Cosmos, we are committed  to delivering this data faster and making it more accessible to those who need it most. open-cosmos.com #OpenCosmos #EarthObservation #Wildfires #Ávila #SatelliteData #ClimateResilience #WildfireMonitoring

  • 🚀 Breaking new ground in onboard autonomy We’re thrilled to share the success of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Dynamic Targeting system, recently tested aboard our satellite HAMMER, also named CogniSAT‑6. This test has marked a pivotal shift in Earth observation. In under 90 seconds, the satellite autonomously decides whether to shoot or skip a photo—all without human intervention. Hammer, designed, built, and operated by Open Cosmos, carries onboard AI from Ubotica Technologies. During this mission, it tilts forward to scan up to 500 km ahead, analyzes cloud cover, then pivots back to capture a ground image only if the view is clear—all while traveling at approximately 7.5 km/s. This streamlines data collection by eliminating cloudy imagery, saving onboard storage, downlink bandwidth, and processing time—ultimately delivering higher quality and more targeted datasets to researchers and decision-makers. Looking ahead: Dynamic Targeting will evolve to actively detect phenomena like wildfires, storms, and volcanic activity via thermal and pattern recognition algorithms—transforming our ability to observe fast-moving environmental events autonomously in near real-time. At Open Cosmos, we’re humbled by the opportunity to help make this vision a reality. Enabling satellites to think in orbit is changing the way we do science in space—and speeding up our capacity to respond to our planet’s most urgent challenges. #OpenCosmos #EarthObservation #AI #SpaceTech #Hammer

  • Rapid Satellite Response Over Tenerife Wildfire Unfortunately, summer once again brings a wave of wildfires across the globe. From southern Europe to North America, communities are facing increasing risks. But with the help of satellite Earth Observation data, we can support emergency services with timely, actionable insights when every minute counts. In the case of the recent wildfire in Tenerife, we are relieved to note that the fire has now been declared under control. But this event has confirmed the need for Open Cosmos's continued investments in achieving real-time responsiveness and service—and OC V1.0 is the solution. On the afternoon of July 28th afternoon the forest fire was declared and yesterday at 16:49 local time, shortly after the fire was reported as under control by authorities, our satellite Hammer captured an image over the affected area in Tenerife in the vicinity of Santiago del Teide and Valle de Arriba. The data was downloaded and processed within hours, allowing us to create this false-color (R-NIR-B) composite, highlighting the impacted zones by comparing our satellite image with a Sentinel-2 image taken on July 28th at 12:52 local time, just hours before the fire started. With over 20 new satellites, we will be able to have satellite overpasses in under two hours from fire ignition, providing timely coverage of emerging events. We will also be able to generate & deliver a fire map in less than five minutes from image acquisition — a game-changer for emergency response. The data delivered is high-resolution and integration-ready, meaning it can be quickly used by first responders, analysts, and civil protection authorities without the need for extensive preprocessing. Open Constellation is about technology that provides timely, actionable insight during critical moments. This is a glimpse of what’s possible when public and private EO missions collaborate at scale. Faster data. Smarter response. #OpenCosmos #TenerifeFire #OpenConstellation #EarthObservation #WildfireMonitoring #RapidResponse

  • 🛰️ We’re on track to complete #6GStarLab - Europe’s first 6G satellite lab in low Earth orbit - right here at our Barcelona facility! Scheduled for launch later this year, 6GStarLab, a pioneering initiative led by the i2CAT Research Centre, will enable open experimentation in non-terrestrial networks (NTN) - essential for the future of global connectivity. Manufactured entirely at our facilities in Barcelona, this mission marks a major milestone for our team and the broader Catalan space ecosystem. We recently welcomed Albert Dalmau Miranda, Minister of the Presidency of the Generalitat de Catalunya to our clean room to see progress on this pioneering mission. Our CEO, Rafel Jorda Siquier, explained the project together with Sergi Figuerola-Fernández, PhD, the director of i2Cat. Read more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/dGQYrm74 The project is funded by #NextGenerationEU through Spain’s UNICO I+D 6G programme. This project is part of the UNICO R+D 6G program and is possible thanks to funding from the Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and #NextGenerationEU funds from the European Union. #OpenCosmos #6GStarLab #i2Cat #SpaceInnovation
