About us

We are one of the largest and busiest acute hospital trusts in Europe and we provide healthcare and specialist services for people from the city of Leeds, Yorkshire and the Humber and beyond.   We play an important role in the training and education of medical, nursing and dental students, and are a centre of world-class research and pioneering new treatments. Leeds Teaching Hospitals has a budget of £1.4 billion and employs around 20,000 people. Our care and clinical expertise is delivered from seven hospitals on five sites, and they are all joined by our vision to be the best for specialist and integrated care. This includes St James's University Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Children's Hospital, Leeds Dental Institute, Chapel Allerton Hospital, Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. Our staff helped to define the values and behaviours that we should work to, and this has become known as The Leeds Way. This forms the foundation of our culture, our ethos and how we work every day.

  • Construction is under way on an operating theatre training space in Leeds which is set to transform sustainable healthcare innovation and research. SUSTAIN (Sustainability and Simulation Theatre for Academia and Industry) will be the only facility of its kind in the UK delivering a brand new, as real, simulated surgical space focused on sustainability and the development of sustainability pathways. This is a truly collaborative programme. Led by the NIHR Accelerated Surgical Care HealthTech Research Centre, in partnership with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, University of Leeds and Department of Health and Social Care, as part of the Design for Life programme, which focuses on developing efficient, resilient, less wasteful healthcare systems. By bringing together expertise in sustainability, surgery, research and innovation, the project aims to help greener, cutting-edge healthcare advances which can improve future patientcare. The lab is housed in the Grade I listed Gilbert Scott Building at Leeds General Infirmary, which was the world’s first civic hospital, famed for delivering national and international medical breakthroughs. • Patients across Leeds and the wider region are set to benefit from increased surgical capacity and enhanced inpatient facilities here at Leeds Teaching Hospitals as work continues on a major £32 million investment at Chapel Allerton Hospital. Hospital colleagues joined our project team and construction company Kier on-site to check out progress. This very significant three-storey Elective Care Hub scheme comprises a 23-bed ward, two operating theatres and an admissions area as an extension to the existing theatres suite. The project will also create a new inpatient ward through the refurbishment of existing areas within the hospital. When open, it will increase our elective operating capacity by more than 1,600 cases per year. Having a dedicated elective care hub away from busier main hospital sites such as Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s means there is capacity which can confidently be used all-year-round.

  • Congratulations to our Finance team on successfully achieving re-accreditation at Level 3 of the One NHS Finance ‘Towards Excellence’ framework. This nationally recognised accreditation benchmarks NHS finance functions against best practice in leadership, technical expertise, innovation and value delivery. Achieving this accreditation is important and shows that we have one of the top performing finance teams to support us in doing as much as we can with the funding available to us. Maintaining Level 3 status demonstrates that the team continues to operate at a highly advanced level, providing strategic leadership, driving transformation and delivering measurable value across the Trust. It also reflects the dedication, expertise and continuous improvement culture in the team. It’s a significant achievement, with only 27 trusts currently at this level. Well done to Finance colleagues.

  • We’re sharing the story of 24 year old Hattie Colwell, who has been rebuilding her smile and confidence with support from our specialist teams. Hattie developed facial palsy after undergoing brain tumour surgery while living in Canada. When she returned home, her care was coordinated across multiple specialist services in Leeds -bringing together surgical expertise, rehabilitation and psychological support. Hattie describes the care she received as “exceptional” and is now back at work, living independently, and supporting others through Facial Palsy UK. Her journey is a powerful example of the difference multidisciplinary, patient centred care can make, read her full story on our website: https://lnkd.in/exSe2iSm

  • From 1–5 June, our Dietetic Assistants teamed up with a Nutricia representative to deliver an engaging Dietitians Week awareness event across several wards. An interactive “nutrition trolley”, stocked with oral nutritional supplements, BDA resources and small giveaways helped spark conversations about malnutrition screening, oral nutritional supplements (ONS) prescribing and the importance of good nutrition and hydration in patient care. Staff feedback was really positive, with colleagues appreciating the chance to ask questions, discuss challenges and even sample products. The team also received great feedback from the British Dietetic Association (BDA), who praised the initiative and its impact across our Trust. A brilliant initiative that strengthened engagement and highlighted the essential role of nutrition in delivering high‑quality care.
