Today’s LCI Analytics Insight takes a look at the herculean efforts of aerial firefighting crews in response to the Los Angeles fires. It provides a visualisation of public flight tracking data, which revealed over 20 firefighting rotorcraft operating in the Los Angeles region between Santa Monica Airport, Van Nuys Airport, and Camarillo Airport on 11 January, 2025 (Data: Flightradar24, Visualisation: LCI Analytics). This rotorcraft included Sikorsky Firehawks, Blackhawks, Leonardo AW139s, Bell Flight 412s and Boeing CH-47Ds As LCI Analytics previously discussed [https://shorturl.at/NVyiD] and [https://shorturl.at/984p1], firefighting seasons are becoming longer, making the traditional approach of moving helicopters between hemispheres increasingly impractical. Unlike other sectors like EMS and SAR, most aerial firefighting contracts are short-term, awarded annually. This uncertainty limits investment in new aircraft and infrastructure, with most helicopters converted from utility models. The recent devastating wildfires in LA could prompt a re-evaluation of contract structures, potentially unlocking long-term investments to boost firefighting capabilities.
