Last year, we had the privilege of winning the WISE Outstanding Women in Science Award for our contributions to the mathematical sciences 👩💻 This year, our CEO Karrie Liu (CMath FIMA) was delighted to return, this time as a judge for the Nurturing New Talent Award ✨, alongside Lucy Elphick and Jack Painter. It was an absolute pleasure to attend the ceremony and to experience the incredible honour of being welcomed by the Patron, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. This award celebrates one of the most essential leadership qualities - compassion 🫂 It recognises an exceptional individual or organisation that selflessly supports and uplifts others, paving the way for the next generation in STEM 💪 🌟 Congratulations to the winner Laura Fogg Rogers, Associate Professor at UWE Bristol, leading Inspire Sustainability’s education outreach and community engagement programmes. She has played a key role in international research collaborations and is a champion of climate action and community energy. 🏆 Also, a huge shout-out to the finalists: 🔹 Kristy Moir, a passionate STEM Ambassador and Stemettes Mentor. She has been instrumental in career development initiatives at Leidos. 🔹 Polly Morgan, CEO of iDEA Foundation. She has scaled the platform to over 2 million learners worldwide, empowering individuals with digital skills. Morgan, NHSX, and the Department of Health and Social Care, Paul is a seasoned Data Scientist specializing in machine learning, AI, and predictive analytics 💻 Currently Lead Data Scientist at Sytner Group, Paul has been building their Data & Analytics function from the ground up, driving AI adoption and data-driven innovation 🚀 At the conference, he’ll be presenting a geospatial route-planning project he developed during his time at NHS England/DHSC. This innovative tool helps NHS staff minimize travel time and environmental impact by optimizing routes using advanced algorithms like the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). January flew by, and we’re already diving into February 2025! 🕊️ They say time flies when you’re having fun - and for us, that’s been especially true as we kicked off an exciting new collaboration 🤝 Last month, we began providing data science support to Logan Tod & Co, working alongside Nigel Cullumbine and ZhiQian Huang on their patient flow analysis tool. This partnership is a fantastic opportunity to apply cutting-edge analytics to a crucial area of healthcare 🩺 But why is patient flow analysis so important? 🤔 In healthcare, every second counts ⏰ Understanding how patients move through their care journey - from first contact to discharge - helps identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and potential risks that impact care quality. Using #ProcessMining and #AdvancedAnalytics, we can map out these journeys, uncover patterns, and highlight opportunities for improvement 📈 The result? Better resource allocation, enhanced coordination of care, and ultimately, improved patient outcomes. Here are some highlights: 📊 Empowering Communities: We partnered with Age UK Wandsworth on a pro bono project, where volunteers tackled impactful data challenges in a collaborative environment. 🧮 Showcasing Maths at Parliament: At the Maths Parliamentary Expo, hosted by Chi Onwurah MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, we demonstrated how maths drives data science, machine learning, and business strategy - key to our mission. 🏆 Recognition for Innovation: We were honoured with the Mulan Foundation Network Ltd’s Contribution to Science and Technology Award, celebrating our strides in mathematical sciences. 🎉 Celebrating Milestones: We were a keynote speaker at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications’s 60th Anniversary and the 20th Anniversary of its ECM, sharing insights and connections with the maths community. 🤝 Driving Real-World Impact: At the 180th European Study Group with Industry (ESGI), hosted by the University of Birmingham, we collaborated with industry leaders to solve real-world challenges through mathematical innovation. 💡 Advancing Diversity: We were inspired by conversations at the WORAN Lightning Talks, hosted by The OR Society and Ruth Kaufman OBE, FORS, FIMA, CSci, and Womanthology’s Inclusion Thought Leaders event, championing inclusivity in analytics.
