🇬🇧🍌 FoodTech 500 alum brings longer-lasting bananas to market. UK-based plant biotech company Tropic will launch its non-browning bananas in March, followed by extended shelf-life bananas by the end of the year. These innovations aim to open new markets for cut fruit, reduce food waste, lower shipping costs, and expand global export opportunities. The company has already secured regulatory approvals in several countries, including the Philippines, Colombia, and the U.S., with more expected soon. Beyond these advancements, Tropic is also expanding field trials for Cavendish bananas resistant to fusarium wilt (TR4), a devastating fungal disease affecting banana crops worldwide. Using its proprietary Gene Editing Induced Gene Silencing (GEiGS) technology, Tropic repurposes the plant’s natural RNAi mechanisms to combat fungi and viruses. Tropic’s broader vision includes licensing its patented GEiGS technology to major agricultural players like Corteva Agriscience, British Sugar, and Genus PLC to enhance disease resistance in various crops and livestock. With approximately $80 million in funding, the company continues to position itself as a leader in plant gene editing, driving innovations that improve sustainability and resilience in global agriculture. 🌱🍳 FoodTech 500 alum bridges that gap between growing demand and decreasing egg supply. As the egg shortage worsens, Eat Just, Inc.'s Just Egg is stepping up to meet demand. With bird flu driving up prices, the plant-based egg is growing five times faster than last year, becoming a reliable choice for the 94% of Americans who eat eggs daily. Made from mung beans, Just Egg is immune to supply disruptions affecting traditional eggs. Often the only option on shelves, it’s earning praise, with chef José Andrés calling it “mind-blowing.” Cholesterol-free and non-GMO, Just Egg is the only U.S. egg with Clean Label Project Certification. With 500 million eggs sold and strong repeat buyers, it’s reshaping the egg market. 🌎🍫 A new industry-wide standard is set to transform how the cocoa sector measures and reports emissions. The World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) has launched a new GHG Accounting Standard Methodology to improve emissions reporting in the cocoa sector. Developed with Quantis, it helps companies meet Scope 3 reporting obligations and aligns with the upcoming European Deforestation Regulation. Amid rising cocoa prices and climate-driven disruptions, the standard provides a unified approach to land use change, carbon removals, and emissions tracking. It supports alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative and the GHG Protocol, ensuring accuracy and compliance with future regulations. Industry leaders welcome the initiative, emphasizing its role in fostering transparency and collaboration. The new methodology joins WCF’s broader sustainability efforts, including tools for deforestation risk assessment and cocoa household income studies. Meanwhile, the alternative chocolate space is thriving with innovative ways to create chocolates without cocoa.
