  • Yesterday we got together for our Thanksgiving team day- something a wonderful American ex-colleague introduced us to, and we’re carrying on the tradition! We all brought in a dish (this year’s theme was street food) as well as a gift for the ultra competitive present game (they had to be under £3 and from a charity shop). Sam hosted three rounds of Catch Phrase, and Mick gave us a lesson on the history of Thanksgiving. We are all so thankful to work with such a fun and supportive team!  #thanksgiving

    The tail can wag the dog “The right man sitting in his house and thinking the right thought will be heard a hundred miles distant.” - Chinese adage We recognise that for a Digital Marketing Manager to feel responsible for bringing about change is daunting. The first thing to accept is that you can’t control what you can’t control. That is to say, if the overall culture is so toxic and driven from the top down then it is best to recognise that and instead focus your efforts on the space that you can influence. Think about how you can contribute to making things better within your sphere of influence. How can you make things better for the people around you? Your team, your colleagues, your partners, your agencies, your boss? “Be the change you want to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi Change does not have to be grand and total, it can be small and incremental with even small improvements having a ripple effect on the whole. Entrepreneur and internet personality Gary Vaynerchuk considers his role as a boss is to serve his people, not the other way around. If you commit to making those in your sphere of influence feel supported, cared for and able to be themselves you will soon find that they love coming to work and the results will inevitably follow. In larger organisations word will get out, people will want to be on your team and some of the things you put in place will be adopted elsewhere. Start small, but, don’t doubt that your actions can be a catalyst and lead the way for the rest of the organisation. The tail can wag the dog.     We all know that staying aware of our competition is essential. But how many of us actually put the work in? What promotions are your competitors running? Do you know off the top of your head?  Are they using loss-leader tactics, or have they found unique ways to stand out? Understanding your competitive environment lets you decide when to break the mould and when to align with market expectations. At the same time, my advice would be to be cautious - don’t follow the crowd blindly, especially if competitors’ offers are driving down margins. Keeping an eye on the competition’s purchase and delivery processes is equally important—are they setting customer expectations that you can meet or exceed? Regularly secret-shopping your own business is a great way to ensure your messaging, experience, and service meet the mark. Your customers have countless choices and aren’t just shopping within a bubble—neither should you. By keeping your finger on the pulse of the industry, you can make strategic moves that resonate with your audience and support long-term growth.
