Redefining single-use plastic packaging with an innovative seaweed-derived material
About us
FlexSea is a sustainable-packaging company aiming to replace traditional petroleum plastic with an innovative natural material derived from seaweed. Our material is degradable in marine, soil and home-composting environments. We want to redefine the way people see plastic packaging. We want to innovate and change the way we see and use plastics. At FlexSea we believe the packaging of the future to be a packaging that is born in nature, serves its purpose, and returns to nature in a harmless way. A packaging that is built to exist, protect and preserve its contents only for the duration that these exist for. At FlexSea the future is now.

🔙Yesterday, Olivia Simpson and Tom Brine had the pleasure of attending the It Starts Here West Midlands: Innovating For Sustainable Growth Event hosted by Invest Wolverhampton! 🏟️Looking out over Molineux Stadium, the energy in the room was fantastic, with private industry innovators and public sector representatives coming together to discuss the future of this dynamic city and region. 🏭Leader of Wolverhampton City Council Stephen Simkins struck an ambitious and inspiring tone, stating the case for Wolverhampton to be at the forefront of the Green Industrial Revolution just as it kick-started the first industrial revolution in the 1700s. ✨As part of the event, Olivia had the pleasure of joining Amber Sandhu on stage for a Q&A covering the history of FlexSea, the road to establishing our pilot plant here in Wolverhampton and our plans for the future! 🔥Wolverhampton, and the whole of the West Midlands, is brimming with ambition and belief in the region’s transformation. Insights from Craig Osman (Jaguar Land Rover UK), Prof Prashant Pillai MBE (University of Wolverhampton) and Steve Bowyer (West Midlands Combined Authority), to name but a few, reinforced the opportunity and benefit of local and global collaboration. From sustainable innovation to entrepreneurial support, the area is positioning itself as a powerhouse for businesses looking to scale. 🙏🏻Huge thanks to everyone who made the event possible, to all those who spoke across the morning, and to those driving real change in the region. The key takeaway – let’s keep the momentum going and keep shouting about the great things we are achieving! #WMItStartsHere #FlexSea #Wolverhampton #WestMidlands #sustainability #bioplastics #innovation #packaging #manufacturing #circular #technology #seaweed #biobased #compostable #foodsafe

🚨 Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, typically less than 5 millimetres in size, that originate from the breakdown of larger plastic items or are manufactured as micro-beads for products like cosmetics. Microplastics are a silent threat, carrying toxic chemicals and harming organisms that ingest them. 🏔️ From the peaks of the Himalayas to the depths of the Mariana Trench, microplastics have been found in every corner of the globe. These particles contaminate soil, rivers, oceans, even the air we breathe. Their persistence is due to the resilience of traditional plastic polymers, which can take hundreds of years to break down fully. 💳 Microplastics are more than an environmental issue - they're a personal one. Studies have detected microplastics in human blood, lungs, and even placental tissue, with an average person consuming the equivalent of one credit card worth of plastic per week. These tiny plastic particles can carry harmful chemicals that interfere with hormonal systems, cause inflammation, and even disrupt cell functions. 👍 As these findings gain global attention, it's clear that addressing microplastics is a matter of urgency. At FlexSea, we’re proud to develop bioplastics that don’t contribute to this invisible threat. With no synthetic plastic polymers or "forever chemicals," our materials help create a safer future for both people and the planet. 🤔 How can industry and innovation combine to eliminate microplastics? 📞 Choose FlexSea’s biodegradable material for a cleaner, sustainable future. 🇹🇭 Thailand Takes a Stance Against Waste Colonialism ⛔️ As of January 1st this year, Thailand has banned imports of plastic waste, taking a stance against waste colonialism that follows China’s lead from 2018. 🗑️ The practice of wealthier nations offloading their waste onto countries in the Global South, creating disproportionate environmental and social harm, has been standard practice for decades. 📬 This decision sends a clear message: first-world nations such as the USA, Japan and Europe, must take responsibility for the pollution they produce. Global cooperation to reduce consumption and develop innovative, alternative materials are necessary and urgent to address this worldwide issue. 🚢 The burden of addressing the plastic crisis should no longer be shipped onto others. We need systems and innovations that enable us to process our own waste in an environmentally responsible manner. 🌱 FlexSea are creating these solutions for your business. If you want to shift your business to using sustainable materials reach out to us today! #FlexSea #Wolverhampton #WestMidlands #WasteColonialism #PlasticBan #sustainability #bioplastics #innovation #packaging #manufacturing #circular #technology #seaweed #biobased #compostable

🥾 Let’s kick off the New Year with some stark reminders of the hold plastics have over our planet and our lives! Join us in our resolution to redefine bioplastics and boot out fossil fuel-based plastics! 💧 1 million plastic drinking bottles, per day! 🗑 30 million tonnes of plastic waste, per month! 🛍 500 billion plastic bags, per year! 🤒 Our planet is sick and choking on plastic! ✍️ Robert Macfarlane demonstrates the damage these “forever materials” are doing in this beautifully haunting passage from his recent book, Underland. 🏝 “I think of photographs I have seen recently of hermit crabs on the remote Pacific atoll of Henderson Island; one crab had taken a plastic doll’s head as its shell, another an empty tub of Avon night cream […] Seas and coasts thicken with plastic trash. Carbon dioxide accumulates in the atmosphere. I recall Don DeLillo’s laconic lethal one-liner from his novel Underworld: “What we excrete comes back to consume us.”” 💪 The good news? The solutions are here, and ready to be embraced! At FlexSea we are working hard to banish single use plastics and shape a better future for our planet.
