🎲 Gamification through #ArtificialIntelligence! 🕹️ The Economist reports that AI can help us figure out "rules containing glitches" in newly invented #games. They cite the example of Alan Wallat, a London-based game designer, who took his latest offering, "Sirius Smugglers," for testing at Tabletop R&D, an #AI startup that uses a game-playing algorithm to play thousands of times and scan plays for irregularities, statistical biases, and "any features that were under- or over-used." Through this #testing, Wallat discovered a problem that allowed losing players to end the game over winning players, which could go on indefinitely. Diego Perez Liebana, one of the forces behind Tabletop R&D who is also a computer scientist at Queen Mary University of London, says this algorithmic gameplay tool has value for #GameDesigners to "perfect their creations." Building AIs in games to mimic human #behaviour requires balancing skill, strategic vision, blindness, sloppiness, and errors in a humanlike manner. Using AI for game-runs can provide data about tweaking the parameters in a game to ensure fairer terms and avoid long periods of dullness. However, measuring a game's #fun remains challenging. There are broad applications for rule-testing and #GameTesting in tools like this. These tests can also help us understand the strengths and limits of responsible and ethical AI initiatives. 🚨 Arrests made in AI-generated abusive material 🚨 Today, Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, announced that 25 people had been arrested in a global operation over #AI-generated child sexual abuse material. Catherine Nicholls reports for CNN that the operation, "Operation Cumberland," was led by Danish law enforcement in one of the world's first cases involving AI-generated child abuse material. The operation spnned 19 countries and included a number of European countries as well as Australia and New Zealand. Nearly 273 suspects have been identified and more arrests are expected in coming weeks. Those individuals already arrested were part of a criminal group. Europol stated, "These artificially generated images are so easily created that they can be produced by individuals with criminal intent, even without substantial technical knowledge." Rights and regulations for #ChildSafety online has been a concern since the dawn of the internet and social media. #ArtificialIntelligence continues to complicate these efforts and more must be done to protect children from harms, #risk, and abuse. 💵 US and UK to work on new AI economic deal! 💷 Yesterday, when UK PM Keir Starmer visited The White House, he and US President Donald Trump announced a "new economic deal with advanced #technology at its core." Reuters News Agency reports that Starmer told reporters, "Instead of over-regulating these new technologies [like #AI], we're seizing the opportunities that they offer." Details of this economic plan have yet to be presented to the public. However, this news follows developments from earlier this month when the US and UK refused to sign an international agreement for "inclusive and sustainable" #ArtificialIntelligence at the AI Action Summit in Paris. Global #AIgovernance consensus has frayed in recent weeks due to the sucession of Trump to the US presidency, the success of DeepSeek AI, and a deregulatory mood sweeping Western liberal democracies involving AI regulation. A sustainable and impactful #EconomicDeal between the US and UK must have responsible and ethical AI as its foundation. ⛑️ Anti-poverty workers use AI to expedite aid! 🥫 Carrie Arnold reports in Nature Magazine about how AI is being used to measure poverty to deliver support and #aid in West #Africa. The initiative, Novissi, is led by Cina Lawson, the Minister of Digital Economy and Transformation in #Togo, scientists from the University of California, Berkeley, and the NGO GiveDirectly. The team takes satellite images and data from mobile phone networks and uses #AI to estimate the wealth of particular regions and individuals, what Lawson describes as a "surgical approach." While this solution is at risk of old, incomplete, and biased #data, it allowed villagers in Togo to receive $10 every two weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that The World Bank claims that 700 million people around the world live on less than $2.15 a day, #Novissi saved lives. This exciting work demonstrates #ArtificialIntelligence breakthroughs in the anti-#poverty space. How could #AntiPoverty work help us better understand the importance of responsible and ethical AI? 🤩 US workers have mixed feelings on AI! 😵💫 A new survey by Pew Research Center of adult workers in the US suggests a mixed picture on the mood surrounding #ArtificialIntelligence. According to the survey, here's a breakdown of how employed US adults generally feel about the #future of AI in the workplace: • 52% feel worried. • 36% feel hopeful. • 33% feel overwhelmed. • 29% feel excited. Similarly, most of those surveyed responded that "not much or none" of their work is done with #AI. • 63% say not much or no AI is used in their work. • 17% say they haven't heard of workplace AI use. • 16% say all, most, or some AI is used in their work. The survey also found that workers feel #chatbots help with efficiency rather than quality. Observing how the AI-first global economy is shaping up around those who use AI tools can help us gauge #impact and value. We believe responsible and ethical AI can maximise that impact and value. 🎡 UK MPs urge government for AI rights! ♟️ Rachel Hall reports for The Guardian that two cross-party committees of MPs in the UK parliament have urged the government to prioritise and ensure fair remuneration to creatives for their work that could be used to train #AI models. In the tension between AI ambitions and #copyright law, the UK government appears to support AI companies being able to train their models on copyrighted work. This position has been met with outcry from #creatives. The #UK government planned to proceed with an "opt out" scheme for creatives. Dame Caroline Dinenage MP DBE, chair of the culture, media, and sport committee, said that such a scheme, where creative works are "fair game unless #creators say so" was akin to "burglars being allowed into your house unless there’s a big sign on your front door expressly telling them that thievery isn’t allowed." These unsettled issues render uncertain the future of #ArtificialIntelligence and creative work. Leveraging responsible and ethical AI tools can summon a win-win solution. 🔓 Decentralised AIs are on the rise! 🤝 Tor Constantino, MBA reports for Forbes that "decentralised AI" - AI from programmable, largely #OpenSource and "far flung, distributed server networks" is a disruptive model that has been "bubbling to the surface." Constantino claims there are several benefits to decentralised #AI models over centralised models like those by OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. These include: 1️⃣ An AI model's single points of failure are eliminated. 2️⃣ Access or development is not controlled by a single entity. 3️⃣ Various #governance and #oversight models are not autocratic. 4️⃣ The #capital expenses are not limited to one group and are incentivised. 5️⃣ Open source #ethics foster transparency rather than secrecy about solutions. 6️⃣ #Blockchain immutability could potentially reduce fraud. Do you think open source models can deliver responsible and ethical AI better? 🎸 Artists release album to protest AI copyright! 🎤 Over 1,000 #musicians released a silent album today to protest the UK government's planned changes to #copyright law. The musicians claim the proposals will "make it easier for #AI companies to train models using copyrighted work without a licence." Paul Glynn reports for BBC News that Annie Lennox, Damon Albarn, and Kate Bush are among the #artists featured on the album, titled "Is This What We Want?" Profits from the album sales will be donated to the charity Help Musicians. Public consultation for the legal proposals around AI and copyright ends later today. In a statement, Kate Bush asked, "In the #music of the future, will our voices go unheard?" Media companies must prioritise protecting humans over maximising #ArtificialIntelligence. Responsible and ethical AI is essential for that. 🗨️ US psychologists warn regulators about AI! 💬 Ellen Barry reports for The New York Times that the American Psychological Association (APA) has warned the Federal Trade Commission that AI #chatbots are "masquerading" as therapists. The US' largest association of psychologists told the federal regulator that these #AI are programmed to "reinforce, rather than to challenge" a user's thinking and "could drive vulnerable people to harm themselves or others." Arthur C. Evans, Ph.D., CEO of the APA, cited court cases involving two teenagers who consulted with #chatbot "psychologists" on Character.AI, one of whom died by suicide and the other, who experiences autism, "grew hostile and violent toward his parents." Parents of both #teenagers have filed lawsuits against the company, according to Barry. Dr. Evans claimed, "[The AI companies] are actually using #algorithms that are antithetical to what a trained clinician would do... Our concern is that more and more people are going to be harmed. People are going to be misled and will misunderstand what good psychological care is." These developments coincide with a deregulatory wave in the #ArtificialIntelligence space championed by the Trump administration. Meaningful AI regulation, grounded by responsible and ethical AI, is a must to ensure people's #safety and the #sustainability of the AI market. 🚦 UK softens on AI regulation! 🚦 Eleni Courea reports for The Guardian that the UK government is reluctant to take regulatory action that could weaken the UK's attractiveness to AI firms. Accordingly, some ministers are seeking to align with the Trump administration on #AI. Similarly, the #UKAIbill that was intended to be published before Christmas has been delayed until the summer. Having "torpedoed" the Biden administration's AI agenda, the Trump administration's anti-regulatory approach brings uncertainty to the global future of #ArtificialIntelligence. Regardless of uncertainty and politics, responsible and ethical AI must be mainstays of the global #tech market.
