Exclusion to Inclusion, Transforming Disability Inequities

About us

Exclusion to inclusion, transforming Disability inequities. 17% of the world’s population experiences Disability, making us the largest minority group in the world. Despite this society continues to disable us. Ableist language, behaviours, beliefs, stereotypes, and prejudice… Lack of opportunity, representation, inequitable support… Inaccessible environments, products, and services… Non inclusive legislation policies and systemic governance… A society that overlooks, excludes, and oppresses Disabled people with systemised barriers to participation and opportunity. As a 100% Disabled-owned business, we know all too well what it means to be Disabled by Society. That’s why we are on a mission to take exclusion to inclusion, transforming Disability inequities. Disabled by Society partners with clients to create bespoke solutions which support them to unlearn ableism, inequity, and inaccessibility across their organisation and wider society. Transforming the way, they design, support, learn, and view Disability. Our solutions provide you the tools and knowledge to create workplaces, products, and services that are accessible and inclusive. Where candidates, colleagues, customers, and clients feel included, represented, and have the opportunity to participate and belong.

It’s time to take the rose-tinted glasses off. It’s not always rainbows and butterflies being Disabled. Sometimes, it’s battling the voice in your own head that tells you you’re the problem, not the barriers around you. It’s unlearning the idea that asking for what you need is a burden and it’s realising that you’re not broken, damaged, or less than because you’re Disabled. Sometimes, as Disabled people, we see others represented as influential, placed on pedestals, and described as having “overcome” or being “resilient.” The reality for many is that this kind of positive framing can make a Disabled person feel like they aren’t doing enough or that they’re not coping as well as they should be. If we only focus on the positives and overlook things like ableism and internalised ableism, we’re not presenting an authentic reality and not having real conversations. I was out walking when I saw this, and it got me thinking about our rose-tinted glasses. How often do we look at things through a lens that only shows part of the story? Image Description: Serving stained glass realness, this Glass of Thrones panel in Titanic Quarter, Belfast, is giving drama, betrayal, and medieval fantasy eleganza! The Glass of Thrones series is a collection of six stunning stained glass installations in Belfast, Northern Ireland, celebrating iconic moments from Game of Thrones. The vibrant panel is divided into three sections, featuring characters from the show and scenes. A crowned figure in golden armour, and dramatic imagery of fire, battles, and castles. Sunlight shines through the glass, enhancing the rich red, orange, and gold tones. The artwork is mounted on a black metal frame and set on a concrete base with plaques. #TuesdayThoughts #DisabledBySociety #DisabilityInclusion #Belfast

Women’s narratives only occupy 0.5% of recorded history. Being a female disrupter - 31 women changing the status quo 👩🏼⚖️. The most part of our lives will be spent figuring out how to add value to the world around you. And doing it in a way that will reciprocate value back to you. This won’t be easy. Many days you will feel like giving up. Some days will feel like the end of the world. Other days will pass by without you noticing. You will have lots of reasons to stay up at night; sometimes sleep won’t come easily, other times you doze off while working. However, you must always remember that those days and trying times do not define you, what defines you is the pride you feel for yourself and your actions and the pride and kindness with which you treat others. To end I shall leave you with poignant quote from Francis of Assisi; “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” We are necessary, and we are here to do the impossible. To celebrate International Women’s Day, Violet Simon’s Disruptors 4 has launched - 31 women disrupting industries, defying expectations, and paving the way for a future where gender is no barrier to success. It is an honour to sit alongside women such as Shelley Zalis, Tania Bryer OBE, Cindy Gallop, Ida Tin, Beth Kume-Holland, Dr Diahanne Rhiney BCAe, Lisa💫 Goodchild, Amy Barklam, Chizomam Emeje (Ph.D, FCLMI), Gabriella Di Laccio, Geraldine Lustgarten, Georgia Meacham. While the world may feel precarious and heavy now, we need Disruptors more than ever before. Each of our stories is woven with inspiring stories and profound insights from women challenging the status quo and redefining what it takes to be a Disruptor in today’s world. The number of sales emails and messages I get is getting worse and worse, cold messages? More like freezing. I just wish people took the time to understand the person or company they’re reaching out to instead of blasting out some random generic message that’s only going to get blocked or deleted. No, thank you, I don’t want to feature in your Top 50, insert whatever random title you are bestowing upon me in your magazine, all for the one-off cost of insert figure here. I don’t pay to win, that’s inequitable, it’s really distasteful, and it’s a massive no from me. No, I do not want to create an app, especially with a person who hasn’t even made their email accessible, heck knows what that app would be like? No, I do not want to jump on a quick call to learn how you can help me build a sales funnel when your message is literally emoji galore. No, I do not want you to build me a website when yours is not accessible. No, I do not want to partner with you, especially when you are sending inaccessible videos and using ableist language like crazy. No, you do not need to resend the same message again and again in the hopes my mind will change. And finally, yes, I am happy to receive messages, but just not inaccessible, pay-to-win, or completely unrelated and unnecessary products that have no relevance to what I do in my role. That's all. #RhinoRant #DisabledBySociety #Outreach #ThursdayThoughts
