Yesterday, I had the opportunity to give a guest lecture at the University of Groningen for the Managing Digital Business course alongside Kevin Kooistra. While we spoke about AI, data-driven decision-making, and how businesses can leverage technology for ESG, what truly stood out to me was the discussion with the students. Beyond showcasing what we do at Datamaran, I hoped to highlight something I deeply believe in: businesses don’t operate in isolation—they impact the world just as much as the world impacts them. They shouldn’t operate solely in the interest of shareholders but consider all stakeholders—customers, employees, communities, and the environment. This was my second guest lecture, and it’s made me reflect on how important it is to give back by sharing knowledge and experience. We explored: 1️⃣ The significance of CSRD—how a standardized framework for sustainability reporting can help investors and customers make informed decisions. 2️⃣ Why double materiality matters—shifting the mindset from "how the world affects business" to also considering "how business affects the world." 3️⃣ The need to break down silos between sustainability and core strategy—and how data and AI can help drive this shift. It’s discussions like these that remind me how important it is to prepare the next generations to make a difference. Hopefully, this session sparked curiosity and reflection! A big thank you to David Langley for the invitation, Marjella Lecourt-Alma for the opportunity and to Kevin Kooistra for leading this with me. Looking forward to more discussions like this!

  • During GreenBiz 25, our SVP Market Leader (and self-confessed policy geek), Donato Calace, had an insightful discussion with Chiara Del Prete, Chair of EFRAG’s Sustainability Reporting Technical Expert Group (TEG). They covered several important topics, including the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, the initial wave of CSRD reports, the challenges companies face during implementation, EFRAG's priorities for 2025, practical advice for first-time reporters, and much more.   🎧 Don’t miss the discussion. • The European Commission’s Omnibus Simplification Package — which proposes revisions to CSRD, CSDDD, and Taxonomy Regulations — has sparked support and opposition in the market. At Datamaran, we are monitoring stakeholder positions and sentiment shifts on this evolving issue. Our team compiles insights from key institutions, companies, and advocacy groups, giving you a weekly pulse on the debate. As of February 19th: - 44% of stakeholders advocate for maintaining the status quo, citing the need for legal certainty, consistency, and reliability. - 44% support broad reform, aiming to streamline processes and reduce regulatory burdens. - 12% conditionally support reform, welcoming simplification while insisting that policy objectives must remain intact. This divide highlights the complexity of aligning regulatory efficiency with sustainability goals. The categorizations applied are: - Status Quo Advocates: This category includes institutions that vote to uphold the standard implementation of regulations to ensure legal certainty while promoting consistency, clarity, and confidence in the application of laws. - Omnibus Reform Supporters: This category includes institutions that advocate for reviewing existing regulations to streamline processes and reduce perceived bureaucracy, as well as the administrative and regulatory burdens associated with implementing legislation. - Conditional Omnibus Supporters: This category includes those who welcome the European Commission’s efforts to reduce administrative and reporting burdens whilst not backtracking on policy objectives and targets. #ESG #Sustainability #Regulation #CSRD #CSDDD #EUCompliance

Can data solutions make ESG easier and better? Is this the way - or part of the way - in which Europe can get off the horns of a dilemma, in relation to its EU Omnibus law - as well as providing assistance in all markets globally? Listen to what Donato Calace, Senior Vice-President at Datamaran thinks on this question, as our guest in the latest 'Frankly Speaking' responsible business podcast, just released. Donato describes how new systems can save significant time to the business in data collection, predicts that data systems are rapidly being developed to better help companies with analysis and insight into what the raw data means and discusses how rapid development of Artificial Intelligence is likely to change the landscape, moving in to the future. As a significant actor in global debates, Donato comments on current political pressures on ESG in Europe and North America, some of his forthcoming work on how a better understanding of 'materiality' can assist the UN Sustainable Development Goals - and in what is the role of 'emotion' in progressing arguments for sustainability? • CSRD isn’t just about reporting — it’s about making better business decisions. The findings of our 2025 CSRD Pulse Check Survey show that companies are leveraging sustainability data for strategic advantage: - 54% of companies rank the identification of impacts, risks, and opportunities as the most valuable CSRD outcome for internal decision-making - 56% will use their first CSRD report to inform strategic planning and risk management - More than 70% of boards are actively engaged in ESG oversight. With ESG embedded in executive priorities and board discussions and integral to company strategy and risk management, the question is no longer whether to act — but how to lead. • For the second week running, our regulation team has been monitoring sentiment toward the European Commission’s Omnibus Simplification Package. The debate remains active, with stakeholders divided between reform advocates, conditional supporters, and those pushing for no change. Key update this week: Since last week's update, only one new joint statement has emerged — from a group advocating to maintain the status quo. This suggests that while discussions continue, positions are becoming more entrenched.   We’ll keep tracking market sentiment as the landscape evolves. If you'd like these updates in your inbox, please reach out to our community team: Lotti Hawkins and Alisha Haigh-Ellery. What’s your take — does the Omnibus Package strike the right balance between simplification and policy integrity? Let us know in the comments! #ESG #CSRD #Sustainability #OmnibusSimplification #RegulatoryInsights
