Their visit brought into focus the breadth and depth of activity happening across the site: ⚡ World-leading fusion research at UKAEA 🔬 Behind-the-scenes tours of JET and the RACE robotics centre 🤖 Advanced capability in automation, robotics and AI 🎓 Conversations with apprentices at Oxfordshire Advanced Skills 📍 Strategic discussions on Culham’s role as an emerging AI Growth Zone But what stood out most wasn’t any single facility - it was the connected ecosystem that makes Culham Campus distinctive. What does it take to operate in environments where humans can’t go? Culham Campus brought together robotics and remote handling specialists from 8 organisations across 4 countries to tackle exactly that. From early-career engineers to experienced professionals, participants joined our first Remote Handling Training Course - delivered by RACE and supported by UKAEA’s FOSTER programme. Over four days, we explored the fundamentals and frontiers of remote operations in high-consequence environments: 🔵 Designing and specifying remotely operated systems 🔵 Tooling principles for reliability and performance 🔵 Software infrastructure for safety, efficiency and accountability 🔵 Risk reduction in complex, hazardous settings 🔵 Building high-performing remote operations teams 🔵 Integrating remote handling into plant design 💬 “A good overview of the topic and an insight into the depth of the field” 💬 “For a course of 4 days, this is perfect” As industries from fusion to nuclear, space and beyond push further into extreme environments, remote handling capability is becoming mission-critical. It combines complex nuclear legacy systems with the unique requirements of a live fusion campus. This week saw the launch of Zenith, the UK's largest AI for science supercomputer, alongside the announcement of the Sovereign AI Innovation Lab (SAIL).
