About us
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales. The CPS is independent, and we make our decisions independently of the police and government. Our duty is to make sure that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence, and to bring offenders to justice wherever possible. The CPS: - Decides which cases should be prosecuted; - Determines the appropriate charges in more serious or complex cases, and advises the police during the early stages of investigations; - Prepares cases and presents them at court; and - Provides information, assistance and support to victims and prosecution witnesses. Prosecutors must be fair, objective and independent. When deciding whether to prosecute a criminal case, our lawyers must follow the Code for Crown Prosecutors. This means that to charge someone with a criminal offence, prosecutors must be satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction, and that prosecuting is in the public interest. The CPS works closely with the police, courts, the Judiciary and other partners to deliver justice.

Last week, Salford Business School students were been given an incredible opportunity to partake in a week of work experience with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). 25 undergraduate students, including LLB #Lawstudents, Rebecca Hilderley, Georgia Allen and Maruf Ahmed, participated in the week. Sessions centred on #employability, pathways into #careers at the CPS, as well as general criminal procedure and the application of the law, including how serious crimes such as sexual offences, hate crime and knife crime are prosecuted. Over on our blog, Rebecca, Georgia and Maruf, discuss why this opportunity was so valuable for their future careers: https://lnkd.in/esytZuQs

Did you know that the Crown Prosecution Service is driving digital innovation in the public sector? Liz, our Head of Software Development, recently spoke to TechMonitor about how her team is using low code to save time and cost by building IT applications in house. So far, the team has launched 38 applications that are improving efficiency across the Crown Prosecution Service, helping our prosecutors to deliver justice to victims and witnesses. Read about how the CPS used low code to rebuild its applications for the cloud era, https://orlo.uk/XCMki It’s not just law. At the Crown Prosecution Service, we have roles in digital, finance, HR, admin and more, https://orlo.uk/QdQlM

Thank you for sharing your experiences Akash 🙂
MSc Criminology & Criminal Psychology Student | Enthusiast in Research | Passionate about Advancing Investigation Standards
Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to take part in the Crown Prosecution Service(CPS) London Work Experience Programme—an experience that has truly deepened my understanding of the criminal justice system in the UK. A huge thank you to Lily Mead, Kalia Parhit ,Richard Marley and the CPS London team for organising such a welcoming and insightful programme. The opportunity to engage with legal professionals, observe courtroom proceedings, and understand the prosecutorial process has been invaluable. Throughout the week, I had the privilege of speaking with several CPS colleagues, whose insights into prosecution and legal careers were truly enlightening. I am also incredibly grateful to Theo Woodhead for taking the time to guide us through court proceedings—it was an eye-opening experience to witness the judicial process firsthand. One of the highlights of the week was meeting Judge Sushil Kumar and Judge Gower, who shared invaluable advice on career progression and the realities of working in the legal field. Their perspectives on the justice system have given me a deeper appreciation of the complexities of prosecution and the role of the courts in delivering justice. As a criminology student, this experience has allowed me to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application. Observing both Magistrates' and Crown Court proceedings has given me a clearer understanding of their distinct functions and how they operate within the wider justice system in the UK. This week has reinforced my passion for criminal justice and investigative work, and I look forward to applying these insights to my research and future career. Thank you once again to everyone at CPS London who made this experience possible! #CriminalJustice #CPS #WorkExperience #Criminology #Prosecution #CourtroomInsights

Thank you for sharing Farihah!
This week, I had the amazing 4-day work experience opportunity with the CPS. I was able to deepen my understanding about the roles within the Crown Prosecution Service, the history of it and what is involved in preparing for a criminal case. I also learned about how the CPS works with victims and witnesses and ensuring that they feel supported throughout the process. The Code of Crown Prosecutors was discussed and how its Code attempts to ensure fairness and accountability throughout the entire prosecution process. What type of cases go through the Magistrates Court and Crown Court was also discussed and I was able to demonstrate my understanding of what type of evidence a Prosecutor may have to work through by applying this through a mock case, which helped to further my skills. I was also able to learn about the different career paths within the CPS and how to apply which was very interesting and insightful to learn about. Thank you to Aston University for the opportunity and The Crown Prosecution Service for providing this work experience.
