Another week, another episode of TheHill's Digital Innovation Podcast! This episode is a follow-on from last week's chat with Concentric Health's co-founder and CEO Dafydd Loughran, with our director Megan Morys-Carter chatting to Susan Downes and Lidia Milla Domingo from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Ophthalmology department about how their pilot of Concentric's digital consent solution was conducted. It's an absolute must-listen for anyone looking to pilot in the #NHS, and for those in the NHS who are looking to facilitate adoption of innovative technology. It's live now, wherever you get your podcasts. Many thanks to our partners at BIPC Oxfordshire for letting us use their space to record this season of the podcast. Feisty roundtables discussing consent for surgery. Yes please. 🙌 80-minute session discussing the state of consent in 2025, the impacts of digital and the EHR, and a fun Concentric vs EPIC vs paper head-to-head at the South West Association of Hand Surgeons (SWASH) annual meeting. Thanks to Anthony Gough for the invite and to Anmar Al-Shawi for the kind reflections on using Concentric at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. A sign of the shift in this space over the past 5 years, 𝟱𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, using either a specialist digital consent provider (there were Concentric Health and Magentus eConsent users in the room) or Epic's eforms solution for consent. Presenting stood in the middle of a roundtable setup; didn't know where to look! And yes, this was a very lovely 'conference' venue - Deer Park Country House

  • Last week, Chloé made a trip across the Solent to visit the team at St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, to join their Concentric clinical engagement event. Our work with the island’s digital transformation team completes a triad of Concentric deployments across the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB. Nicola Attrill and Emily Steel (CMgr MCMI) from the IOW team led the charge on the event, supported by seasoned pros George Reynolds and Sara Osborne from the Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust digital team, with stations set up for the various clinical teams. The subsequent day saw General Surgery's digital consent go-live, followed by a rollout across the Trust over the coming months. Mr Martin Klein, Consultant General Surgeon at the IOW, shared a video of his reflections on the introduction of Concentric:

🚀 The Future of Robotic Surgery & Digital Consent: Innovation, Risk & Legal Challenges Two insightful talks here at the Medical AI, Robotics & Tech Conference explored the opportunities and risks in surgical innovation: 🔹 Digital Consent & Big Data - Edward St John discussed how digital consent is revolutionizing patient care, enabling structured data collection, real-time complication tracking, and AI-driven decision-making. 🔹 Legal Aspects of Robotic Surgery – Flora McCabe highlighted the growing legal complexities in robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), including consent challenges, liability concerns, and regulatory gaps as robotics become more integrated into clinical practice. Key Takeaways for Healthcare Professionals & Regulators ✅ Digital consent improves transparency – It standardises risk disclosure, enhances shared decision-making, and provides big data insights into complication rates & patient outcomes. ⚖️ Legal risks in robotic surgery are rising – The UK has seen increasing claims, with law firms now targeting robotic surgery lawsuits. Consent failures, training gaps & device malfunctions are key legal concerns. 🩺 Surgeons remain accountable in RAS – Robotics does not replace clinical responsibility; instead, it increases the need for comprehensive consent, structured training, and clear governance frameworks. 📃 AI & data-driven consent could transform risk assessment – Patient-reported complications linked to digital consent can help refine risk models and improve surgical decision-making at both individual and national levels. 💡 Real-World Cases & Lessons Learned • A 69-year-old patient died after a hospital performed its first-ever robotic heart surgery—with no prior simulator training. • A woman’s ovaries were mistakenly removed in a robotic surgery trial—without her knowledge. Both cases highlight the dangers of “novelty bias”—where enthusiasm for new technology overrides patient safety. The Future of Surgical Innovation: What’s Next? 🤖 Robotic surgery is evolving, but current systems remain at Level 0 autonomy (fully surgeon-controlled). As AI integration increases, accountability will shift between surgeons, hospitals & manufacturers. 📜 Stronger governance frameworks are needed, including: 🔹 Mandatory robotic surgery training & credentialing 🔹 Standardised AI & digital consent guidelines 🔹 Better regulatory oversight on robotic-assisted procedures As robotics and AI continue to shape surgery, ethical, legal, and governance frameworks must evolve in parallel to ensure safer, data-driven care.

NHS figures show that over 21,000 last-minute operations were cancelled in the three months leading to 2024. Around 10% of delays and cancellations relate to day-of-surgery consent processes.  By integrating CardMedic’s content and communication tools with Concentric Health’s digitised consent solution, we've developed an integrated platform that can reduce last minute cancellations and enables hospitals to have consent conversations earlier in the patient journey.  Find out more about how this unique collaboration has driven positive change in the blog 👇 Dr Penny Kechagioglou Dafydd Loughran University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator - WMHTIA University of Warwick

  • 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: 𝟴𝟴 - 𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 Until now, all consent templates within Concentric have had the same overall structure, including the documentation of the reason for treatment, alternatives, and the risks involved. This structure doesn’t work for all consent scenarios, which has led to organisations running a parallel process for some types of consent, such as genetics and medical photography consent. Release 88 introduces a new type of consent template that does not include the indication, purpose, alternative, anaesthetic options, and risks sections but otherwise follows the familiar structure and workflow. As an example, the genetic consent below uses this new consent type. It includes a description of the test, links to additional resources, and bespoke consent statements. The elements that are not relevant in this context, such as anaesthetic options and risks presented by timing and likelihood, are removed. (Image 1) 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 Previously, if desired, you’ve needed to select additional resources to share within clinician view. From your feedback, we know that you often want to share specific resources with every person having a procedure, for example, a link to patient information from the relevant Royal College or National Association. These can now be added by default to treatment information (i.e. don’t need to be selected), presented alongside the lay description. (See image 2 for example) 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 Two new guidance banners can be used in clinician view, supporting clinicians to consider what template information may need amending for the individual patient. Treatment banners are presented within the first section of clinician view and can be used as a patient safety nudge that the procedure name needs editing. For example, to state which digit or spinal level is being operated on. (See image 3 for example) When researching risk profiles, our ontology clinicians encounter scenarios where the risk profile differs depending on patient factors. Historically, it’s not been possible for us to convey this context to a clinician within clinician view. Risk banners can now be added, describing modifications that may be appropriate. (See image 4 for example) 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 (𝘄/𝗰 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗙𝗲𝗯 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱) Consent episodes 'consented' during the week: 21,207 Clinician users during the week: 7,324
