About us

Policing the Square Mile brings with it particular challenges, quite unlike any other policing area within the UK. The City of London is the world’s leading international financial and business centre. It is an area where disruption to ‘business as usual’ would have significant impact on the diverse range of business interests located here. We are committed to fighting crime at all levels. Although we fulfil a national role tackling fraud and other serious criminality, our local role is no less important to us.

  • Our Spiking Testing Officer recently met Raejay, Manager at Simmons. As a licensed premises in the City, we visited to carry out one of our regular tests, checking that venues know how to respond if a report of a suspected drink spiking is made to bar staff. We’re pleased to report that Simmons handled the test perfectly 👏. We’ll continue to test and educate venues across the City of London to ensure that the Square Mile is a safe place for those that come to enjoy the night time economy.

  • A man who collapsed from a cardiac arrest in the City of London has been reunited with the police officers and paramedic who saved his life. On 16 November 2023, Mal Patel had collapsed on Cheapside and was unresponsive when City of London Police constables Neil Geddis and Jack Watson were flagged down by a member of the public and rushed to his assistance. PC Watson immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while PC Geddis made sure members of the public were out of the way and gathered witness information on what had happened. The officers first on the scene requested a defibrillator. Within just two minutes, the green team from the Tactical Firearms Group, who are trained in advanced medical care, arrived on the scene. They used a defibrillator to stabilise Mr Patel and took over CPR. The firearms officers managed to regain a pulse and kept him stable until a crew from London Ambulance Service NHS Trust arrived, including Motorcycle Paramedic Paul Soffe, who continued treatment and the ambulance crew took Mr Patel to hospital. Mr Patel went on to make a full recovery. It wasn’t until a year later, when Mr Patel approached two firearms officers explaining that he was unable to track down the officers who saved his life, the two realised it was their team who saved him.  Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eJvCXJm2

  • A mother hopes more women and girls feel empowered to speak up about sexual abuse and help police catch more predators, just like her daughter did. The mother has spoken for the first time about sexual assault carried out on her 14-year-old daughter by former Metropolitan Police Special Constable Hassnain Shahzad. She and her daughter hope that by telling the immeasurable impact the assault has had on them, it might empower more women and girls to speak out about abuse they have experienced and bring others to justice. For the two counts of sexual assault, Hassnain Shahzad, 27, of Ilford Lane, Ilford was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court to six months in prison for both offences to run concurrently, suspended for 18 months. He’s been ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. He was found guilty of sexual assault by a jury on Monday 6 January at Inner London Crown. Shahzad will be on the sex offenders register for seven years with conditions. The mother and daughter, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were waiting to pay for shopping at Bishopsgate Tesco on Friday 25 August 2023 at 22:48. Shahzad was queuing behind them and then passed by the victim, touching her bottom. The victim looked at him and noticed he was carrying pineapple chunks. As it was crowded the victim didn’t then realise Shahzad’s actions had been intentional. The mother and daughter left the store in the direction of their hotel. Shahzad was caught on CCTV approaching the victim on the pavement from behind and touching her. The footage shows that Shahzad was clearly able to avoid the victim, but made a beeline for her. The victim alerted her mother about what had happened on the street and in Tesco. The mother said, “She was distraught and just wanted to go back home rather than the hotel. At this stage two young women approached us to see what had happened. They implored us to go back to the store and see how they could help us. I never got their names but I’m extremely grateful to them for taking the time to talk to us and suggesting we went back to Tesco and see the CCTV.” The mother was full of praise for her daughter mentioning the assault and never backing down during the difficult process. She said, “At no point did she say ‘I don’t want to do this’, or withdraw from the prosecution. It was a stressful time for her as she had her exams which she completed and never asked for extra help. She doesn’t see it as brave, but I am in admiration of my child."
