"We found that 27% of UK-based investment professionals in 2025 are women, up from 24% in 2023. In senior level positions, women now hold 15% of roles, an increase from 12% in 2023... Although strides have been made by the industry, there is still a long way to go before private capital can match levels seen in public markets." In the latest Insight article, Suzi Gillespie, BVCA’s Head of Research, analyses the progress made by the private capital industry in progressing gender and ethnic diversity within the workforce. Suzi explores the value of obtaining more data from the industry, explains private capital’s apprenticeship model for recruitment and retention and delves into the latest findings from the BVCA and Level 20’s Diversity in Private Equity and Venture Capital 2025 report (https://lnkd.in/eYy4u8dZ) Read the full Insight article here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e9JiazkB

“The UK must take the opportunity to build on our status as a leader in impact investing”, BVCA Chief Executive, Michael Moore emphasised. Today, the City of London Corporation in collaboration with the Impact Investing Institute, BVCA, ImpactVC and Better Society Capital published a whitepaper on how the Government can deliver impact-led economic growth and break down barriers to opportunities through the support of #privateequity and #venturecapital. ‘Delivering Government missions using impact-led venture capital and private equity’ sets out recommendations to advance Government initiatives for economic growth, health and clean energy. Highlighting how private capital drives impact within the UK’s nations and regions, the whitepaper showcases case studies from BVCA members including: 💡 Nesta, who invested £550,000 in the seed round in specialist out-of-school education provider Gaia Learning. Gaia Learning is a north-west based edtech business which delivers live, online learning classes and courses for neurodivergent children aged 8-16 with ADHD and autism - helping to break down barriers to opportunity. 💡 Midven, part of Future Planet Capital, has funded Forge Care, residential care homes for children which are equipped with communal gardens, sports, therapy, and amenity spaces - helping to address complex social issues. 💡 Palatine invested in Back2Work (B2W), which helps people return to work, gain new skills for employment, and build skills to enter better-paid careers. Over 3,000 people to date in the Greater Manchester region have achieved job outcomes with earnings above the National Living Wage or progressed into further education through its work - helping to kick start the economy. 🔗 Read the full report here - https://lnkd.in/eiKyArXr

Accelerate Action for Women 🚀✨ In celebration of #InternationalWomensDay (IWD) tomorrow, the BVCA held its annual IWD reception this week, bringing together private capital leaders to discuss how to positively impact women's advancement in the industry. Led by BVCA’s Head of Research, Suzi Gillespie, the event focused on the progress being made by the industry in supporting women and discussed the interventions that should be made in the workplace to support progress. 📣 The event also marked the launch of BVCA’s prestigious 2025 Inspirational Women Award with Helen Steers MBE, Partner at Pantheon, announcing the opening of nominations. Born out of the UK Government’s ‘Women-Led High-Growth Enterprise Taskforce’, which published its recommendations in its final report on February 2024, the award aims to inspire the next generation of female entrepreneurs by celebrating the success of leaders from high growth businesses backed by private equity and venture capital. In 2024, the BVCA awarded Investment Minister, Baroness Poppy Gustafsson, as the first winner of the Inspirational Women Award for her work as co-founder and chief executive officer at Darktrace. The 2025 award winner will be announced at the BVCA’s flagship Summit Main Conference, taking place on 10 September 2025. The independent judging panel will be chaired by Cheryl Potter, Non-Executive Director of Level 20 and Marks and Spencer and include Helen Steers MBE, IQ Capital’s Kerry Baldwin, and Amadeus Capital Partners’ Anne M. Glover. Through continued industry collaboration, working with organisations like Level 20 and Diversity VC, and support for initiatives like the Invest in Women Taskforce, the Investing in Women Code and the Women in Finance charter, the BVCA is working to support #privateequity and #venturecapital firms to build inclusive environments in which everyone can thrive. "These first few weeks have been breathtaking. In the sense of the discomfort experienced after sprinting a couple of hundred metres for a train, rather than standing to behold a beautiful view." 💷 UK Economy Could Grow by £100bn with Productivity Boost Inspired by Private Capital-Backed Firms 📈 New analysis carried out by Public First for the BVCA estimates that private capital-backed businesses increase their productivity by 1.1% per year more than the business population as a whole. If this productivity growth was realised across all private enterprises from 2025 ◼️ The UK economy would be £100bn larger by the end of this Parliament (2029) and £250bn larger within a decade. ◼️ Within a decade, output per worker would be £7,000 (in today’s prices) and UK productivity would be on track to overtake that of Germany by 2038. This would return UK productivity to the projected trend it was on before the financial crisis. The active ownership model of private capital investors offers lessons to policymakers about how to improve productivity levels across the economy. Our recent Investment Commission set out some of the interventions and support which #PE and #VC firms routinely provide to their portfolio companies to boost productivity and value creation. This includes: 1️⃣ Putting in place a strategic plan, so that management understands what the company’s goals are and how it intends to achieve them, to support decision-making and enable performance to be properly measured against meaningful benchmarks. 2️⃣ Providing management and leadership support, to help managers lead their businesses through the changes required for a company to grow. 3️⃣ Introducing new ways of measuring productivity so that portfolio companies can use data to understand where they are performing well and where there are areas for improvement, and so that they are properly accountable to their investors.
