Single-use items (SUIs) have become a staple in healthcare, especially for infection control. However, the production, disposal and incineration of these materials is contributing to climate challenges, polluting ecosystems, destroying habitats and having a serious impact on human health. In this issue of The Big Question, Rachel Donnison and Ian Culligan explore how the introduction of reusable and sustainable products could help reduce carbon emissions and microplastics to protect both human and planetary health. #TheBigQuestion #Bupa #Sustainability

We know that cancer impacts the lives of many of us, directly or indirectly. This World Cancer Day, we’re sharing the story of Bupa member Michelle, who says exercise helped her survive cancer. Aged 60, Michelle found herself severely overweight and with a cancer diagnosis. Armed with that life-changing news, Michelle declared war against the disease and turned her health and wellbeing around to find her new normal. “A routine blood test in 2019 uncovered that I have chronic lymphoma, but I was also suffering from osteoarthritis, and I couldn't walk. I was too embarrassed to go out, I was 40 kilos overweight, and it was crushing my knees,” Michelle said. “That’s the point when I told myself I had to keep going. I had to try because I didn't want cancer to take over my body.” Michelle is now cancer-free and recently embarked on a TAFE course to become a personal trainer in the hope of showing people, it’s never too late to start.
