We are committed to advancing justice and equality across six key pillar areas: Education, Economic Empowerment, Health, Justice, Immigration and Rights, Culture Awareness and Representation, and Housing. Our work is grounded in evidence-based practices, using the power of data to assess and address issues of disproportionality impacting Black communities. In line with our mission, we are seeking to create a pool of Black researchers interested in contributing to our various research projects across these pillars. These projects will focus on critical issues that affect Black communities and demand nuanced, data-driven insights. We are looking for researchers with expertise in the following areas: ➡️Methodologies: Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, including but not limited to mixed methods, data analysis, case studies, and surveys. ➡️Thematic Areas: A deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the core pillar areas, especially those affecting Black communities. This includes familiarity with systemic inequalities, public policy, and community-led initiatives. ➡️Expertise: Scholars with academic or professional experience in one or more of the following areas: racial justice, policy analysis, community development, health disparities, criminal justice reform, economic inequality, or cultural studies. If you are interested in collaborating with BEO on projects that will help shape policies, improve Black communities’ outcomes, and challenge systemic barriers, we invite you to join our research pool. Please send your CV, along with a brief overview of your research accomplishments, methodologies, and any relevant expertise, to us at [email protected]. #RecruitmentforResearchers #BlackResearchers #RacialJustice #DataDriven #CommunityDevelopment #BlackEquity #SocialJustice

Under new guidance by the Sentencing Council magistrates and judges would be asked to consult a pre-sentence report before determining whether to imprison someone of an ethnic or religious minority as well as young adults, abuse survivors and pregnant women. This move is aimed at tackling racial, religious, and other bias and reducing reoffending. Government ministers are vocalising their disagreement to this new guidance, including Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, however, we encourage ministers to examine why this guidance is a step forward in judicial equity and equality. Currently, Black and minority ethnic communities are overrepresented at every stage of the criminal justice process and are more likely to be imprisoned and receive longer sentences than white counterparts. Black male offenders had an average custodial sentencing length of 28.3 months, whilst white male sentencing on average was 21.8 months. The new guidance which comes into force on 1st April, is a step forward. #CriminalJusticeReform #SentencingGuidelines #SocialJustice #EquityInJustice #RacialBias #LegalReform #CriminalJusticeSystem

Celebrating the life of Angie Stone 🖤 Angie sadly lost her life in a car crash this weekend, and we want to honour her legacy. She was a founding member of groundbreaking female hip-hop trio The Sequence in the late 70s at the age of 16. They scored a hit with 'Funk You Up', a song that was later sampled by Dr Dre for his single 'Keep Their Heads Ringin' and Bruno Mars in 'Uptown Funk'. With hits like 'Wish I Didn’t Miss You' and ‘No More Rain (In This Cloud)' Angie's music was timeless. In June 2024, Stone was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame. May her legacy live on 🕊️

This #BlackJoyFriday we're celebrating Barbara Mills KC. For the first time in its 131 year history, the Bar Council which represents barristers in England and Wales has appointed the first Black woman to lead the organisation. Barbara Mills takes over this year in a profession where there are only 7 other Black female KCs. "I was called to the Bar in October 1990. And there were people who said that the Bar was for a certain kind of person. And so that discomfort of doing it anyway has always been with me. I didn’t need to become Chair of the Bar to break a glass ceiling, to feel the shards. And I can either lean into negativity or I can lean out of it. And so I’ve learnt over the years to lean out of it and focus on the positives." #DiversityInLaw #WomenInLaw #RepresentationMatters #BlackExcellence #BreakingBarriers

Hair products sometimes used by Black women may contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals linked with serious health issues, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Tamarra James-Todd “About 50 percent of products advertised to Black women contain these types of chemicals, compared to maybe only 7 percent that are advertised to white women,” said James-Todd. This is extremely concerning and regulations should be in place to prevent products containing harmful chemicals being sold. We encourage you to research and find alternatives that may be better for your health. #BlackHairCare #HealthyHair #NaturalHairProducts #EndocrineDisruptors #ChemicalsInBeauty #HairHealth #PublicHealth

📢 Last year we challenged the University of Chichester's decision to suspend their MRes History of Africa and African Diaspora Course as they did not carry out any consultation or an equality impact assessment of their decision. Whilst we weren't successful, we are proud to announce that the thirteen students who took legal action against the university have been successful in their legal challenge. The Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education ruled that students who registered on the course run by Professor Hakim Adi or who were supported in their PhD studies by him, had a legitimate expectation to learn directly from him. The fact that the course was axed and that the Professor was made redundant meant that it was not possible for them to do so. This is a big win and we hope the teaching of Black history is protected. You can read more about this case on our website: https://lnkd.in/d3g_e3RA #HigherEducation #LegalChallenge #BlackHistory #UniversityOfChichester
