ADSys: Asteroid Deflection System to Avoid Human Extinction and Disaster from Potential Near Earth Object(NEO) Impacts Abstract The threat posed by Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) is a significant and ongoing concern for the long-term survival of humanity. While asteroid detection and tracking capabilities are improving, effective deflection strategies are crucial for mitigating the risk of a catastrophic impact. This paper introduces the Asteroid Deflection System (ADSys), a novel approach to asteroid deflection that leverages the asteroid's own momentum and mass to achieve trajectory alteration. The core concept involves deploying a series of tethered weights that, through controlled rotation, impart a consistent and adjustable delta-v to the asteroid. Key innovations include the use of dynamic Pivot-Spring Tethers (PsprTs) that switch between rigid (PivotJoint) and flexible (DampedSpring) behavior, asymmetric weight distribution and tether lengths, and an autonomous AI control system. Simulations using the Pymunk physics engine demonstrate the fundamental feasibility of the concept, showing smooth, controlled deflection of a simulated asteroid. While further refinements are underway, the results presented here, particularly the successful implementation of dynamic tether behavior and the elimination of significant oscillations, warrant immediate and broader investigation. Given the potential urgency of the NEO threat within the 2028-2032 timeframe, this paper calls for parallel development efforts on ADSys and related deflection technologies by the wider scientific and engineering community. https://lnkd.in/gXNViTZw https://lnkd.in/gGJZPniR ©2024 bio-neural.ai, Ava Billions ART, STUDIO 100M, AOG Ent, FWyine Magazine.
