That’s a wrap for #SAW25! It’s been a real pleasure to meet and chat to some of our apprentices this week. It’s been inspiring to hear about their journeys, most memorable moments, and the valuable, hands-on experience and mentorship they’ve received so far. Our final spotlight of the week is on Leah Kelso. Working across a range projects in Scotland, apprentices like Leah play a crucial role in supporting the safety and well-being of our people. Leah's most memorable moment so far into her apprenticeship was visiting the famous Scottish landmark, the Forth Bridge. “Despite my slight fear of heights, I vividly remember ascending in the lift, which took us up to 110 meters (361 feet) above high water”. Reaching the top and looking over the scenic view opposite the Queensferry Crossing, Leah says, “I was amazed by the scaffold designed to provide a high level of safety for anyone working at such heights.” Witnessing the proactive measures taken by the site team in terms of safety filled her with pride. “This experience has motivated and empowered me to push the boundaries of health and safety in my work, contributing to the safety standards that protect everyone working for us”. Join us to gain the practical skills you need to kickstart your career and make a positive impact that will last for generations to come. Feeling inspired? This #SAW2025, meet Riana Jonas, who has just embarked on her apprenticeship journey! 🎉 Based in Edinburgh and working on the iconic North Bridge project, Riana loves the blend of classroom learning and hands-on experience. 📚🛠️ Riana explained to us how her university studies have given her a deeper understanding of the work she does in her apprenticeship. “As we studied what causes concrete to deteriorate, I could directly apply that knowledge to my job, especially when assessing the bridge roads,” she says. “Not only has it helped me to look at things more critically and understand why certain issues occur, but connecting theory to practice has brought my classroom learning to life and given me valuable insights to share with my tutors and fellow students." When we asked about her biggest highlight while working at Balfour Beatty so far, she told us, “Honestly, just securing my apprenticeship was a huge moment for me! And getting to work on the iconic North Bridge – it doesn’t get much better than that! I’m so glad I pursued an apprenticeship." We’re celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2025! 🎉 Meet Rui Carballo, who is now a Graduate Engineer after successfully completing his apprenticeship. From considering a career as a PE teacher to building his future in the construction industry, Rui's journey is inspiring! During COVID-19, Rui applied for full-time university courses but soon realised that an apprenticeship was his true calling. “The hand-on experience excited me, and I’ve never looked back!”. Rui believes this path was perfect for him, saying: “My apprenticeship has given me an incredible advantage over university. It’s like I’ve had a head start as I’ve gained hands-on experience, built strong connections, and mastered industry terminology – all while growing in confidence and feeling empowered to share my ideas”. The decision has already paid off for Rui. He takes pride in being part of the project delivery team for the award-winning Stockingfield Bridge. “Every time I pass the bridge, I’m reminded of the role I played in bringing it to life. I’m excited for many more proud moments as my career progresses!”. Recognising his hard work both on-site at Stockingfield Bridge and at university Rui was awarded a Regional Scotland Grant Taylor Memorial Award for early careers.
