THE SUCCESS OF BONNINGTON CAFÉ! HOW THE 'BACKING INTERNATIONAL SMALL RESTAURANTS' GRANT PROGRAM IS SUPPORTING HOSPITALITY In the heart of Bonnington Square—a diverse south London neighbourhood with a storied past—Bonnington Café stands as a community-run establishment serving vegetarian and vegan cuisine from various cultures. Originally built in the 1870s to house railway workers, the neighbourhood fell into decline by the 1980s and had become largely inhabited by squatters. Amidst these trying times, a communal “pleasure garden” was created on land where seven houses had been destroyed in World War II, establishing the foundation of an enduring and resilient community spirit. The café, a champion of this spirit, was recently awarded £11,000 through the 2024 Backing International Small Restaurants grant program—one of just 20 restaurants selected across London and Manchester. “Our new commercial ventilation system is working brilliantly, hugely reducing both heat and condensation in the kitchen and café,” said Chris Woods, speaking for the Bonnington Centre Community Association (BCCA) trustees and staff. “And thanks to the grant, we’ve been able to boost cooks’ workspace area by a whopping 30%. Meanwhile, our new website hugely improves our public presentation of our wonderful cafe—and will make the booking experience for customers far, far easier! None of these changes would have been possible without the grant.” The funding came at a critical moment for the café, which had unexpectedly closed in 2021 after serving the community for nearly four decades. When a new group of local trustees took over the BCCA in 2023, reopening the café became their top priority. The grant enabled immediate kitchen upgrades that would have otherwise taken years to implement, including new commercial ventilation, gas safety systems and the café’s first-ever commercial dishwasher. These improvements have significantly enhanced working conditions for staff while simultaneously creating a better experience for the diverse community that has made Bonnington Square such a unique London destination. The Backing International Small Restaurants Grant Program returns for 2025. Eligible businesses across Greater Manchester and Greater London can apply now. We encourage members and friends of ATCM to spread the word. For more information visit: https://lnkd.in/dWfDVE4h American Express IDA Foundation

HOW TO MAXIMISE OUR CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY ASSETS SUMMER SCHOOL 2025 In recent decades, town and city centres have changed beyond recognition. Out-of-town shopping and an emerging digital economy have caused huge disruption. However, there remain some aspects where towns and cities across the UK and Ireland are unassailable. With history and heritage dating back sometimes centuries, their cultural relevance and community roots in everyday life are unmatched. If these assets are used to their full potential then the ability to deliver pride in place, footfall and investment is powerful. So can we use culture and community as platforms for relevance in a world subject to rapid change? The theme for the 2025 Summer School is ‘How to Maximise our Cultural and Community Assets’. This two day event will take place in Bradford, the 2025 City of Culture, and will deliver a programme packed with learnings on powerful urban story-telling, hosting world class events and community empowerment. Summer School will include keynotes, panel debates, workshops, study tours, the Purple Flag Awards and the Town and City Management Industry Awards. Join us for the place management event of the year. Tickets are available here… https://lnkd.in/dQsv55Hz
