Integrating the myriad dimensions of identity during your product development process feels daunting, doesn't it? Gabriela, our Design Principal, talked about this challenge in our recent webinar, and shared how we tackle it: we initially focus on identifying the most relevant dimensions of identity that will impact user interaction with the product. Unfortunately, Figma is still accessible to users in Russia. This is not right. Russians are utilizing Figma for both professional work and propaganda purposes. The income generated through this work contributes to the Russian economy, subsequently funding the criminal war against Ukraine. By continuing to allow access, Figma indirectly supports the financial mechanisms that perpetuate Russian violence. We have seen precedents where companies have taken decisive action. For example, Shopify suspended services for Russian users in March 2022, demonstrating a commitment to ethical business practices. It is now time for Figma to follow suit and block access to users in Russia. This step is not just about corporate responsibility; it's about standing in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and opposing the use of technology to further aggression. I urge Figma to take immediate action and align with the global efforts to promote peace and security. #Russia #War #Ukraine

A few years back, I gave a lecture about UX research at the Estonian Academy of Arts. During the lecture, I explained how to measure every design detail to demonstrate its impact. While showcasing a design update that had a positive impact, someone from the audience asked me a rhetorical question about overemphasizing every metric and measure, especially when the impact is already apparent. I still think about this question from time to time. Should we measure the obvious, then? While compiling case studies for my portfolio, one particular project stood out, prompting a personal revelation. It was a settings redesign project, including nine different settings pages and nine tasks for users to set up their workspace. Without the need to measure anything, one page stood out with particularly poor UX—it did not follow industry conventions, state communication wasn’t clear, consistency between this and other parts of the product was poor, and the list goes on. At the beginning of the project, we measured the baseline for each of those settings pages, including 1) task success, 2) time on task, 3) the number of clicks, and 4) perceived usability. Based on these metrics, we set clear goals and priorities and kicked off the project starting from the page with the lowest task success rate. Results? We tested the new version against the baseline. Interaction effort decreased significantly, task success increased by 77 pp, time on task decreased by 80%, and the number of clicks decreased by 81%. A specific feature usage, which we aimed to boost, increased 6x. The project was clearly successful. Even though I could safely say that everyone who saw the page before the redesign could have said that (and did say that) ‘it’s not great,’ ‘UX is poor,’ or ‘it could be improved.’ we still cared to measure it. So what was the personal revelation then? It confirmed I was doing the right thing. Even the most obvious is worth measuring. In our case, it helped us: ✅ Prioritize projects ✅ Understand the importance of the project itself and confirm our hypothesis ✅ Set goals ✅ Compare the previous and new version ✅ Boost the team spirit - our work matters. (Thinking about how we improved the user experience - the time on task moved from almost 5 minutes to less than one minute - makes me smile and brings me joy about what we can achieve together with a team!) Furthermore, measuring the design could also help you to: ✅ Finish ongoing design discussions and make a decision ✅ Set hypotheses and come up with research questions ✅ Connect the dots between design and business ✅ Communicate the value of design ✅ Learn from mistakes and successes #UX #design #uxdesign #uxresearch
