What is Hoplite Healthcare, and why does it exist? Hoplite is a geographically distributed, sub-specialty agnostic group of physician innovators who seek to help ensure that healthcare capital is allocated efficiently, primarily in the domain of venture capital. Venture capital investors (VCs) are really important, especially to healthcare. The NIH spends around $45 BB/yr to increase basic science knowledge in the US, but the largest Institutes allocate only around a fraction of that (maybe 2%) to commercialization. That means the burden of bringing technology to the marketplace falls on the private sector. Remember, no matter how good your idea is, unless someone figures out how to protect the intellectual property, navigate the regulatory landscape, manufacture the technology, market it, and sell it at a price point that generates a profit, it will never ever help a patient. Enter venture capital - after people with good ideas raise money from a "friends and family" round, and angel investors, if their idea has merit, it will garner the attention of VCs. After extensive evaluation, they may make a significant investment in this new idea/company, and in return will take a significant equity position (i.e. own part of the company). VCs have deep experience in scaling businesses, and work hard to help these startups advance their business to the point that they can either be acquired or go public. But this work is really, really hard. VCs compete with each other for the best "deal flow" (access to the most promising companies). Science and healthcare are increasingly complex, making it harder and harder to evaluate the technical merit (remember Theranos?) or market potential of a company. Additionally, not all startup ecosystems are created equal, with those on the coasts (particularly Boston, New York, and Bay Area) having an advantage in terms of both access to capital and also expert networks (think Harvard, Columbia, Stanford). But innovation in the United States does not just live on the coasts, and the perspective of healthcare providers can sometimes get lost in the noise of the technology and business case. Enter Hoplite. Our network is designed to help VCs in two ways. First, by identifying promising early stage companies that are coming out of academia as well as local biohubs and angel investors where we live. Second, by helping VCs evaluate these companies from the perspective of a healthcare provider who will actually use the technology. Why? Because we believe that the United States, despite all its problems with cost and complexity, is the healthcare innovation engine of the world, and have an ethical responsibility to ensure that the dollars our country invests in healthcare companies go to the right places - if we get that right, all of us will benefit.

SBVA, formerly known as SoftBank Ventures Asia, has disclosed that they have invested 2 billion KRW in The Sleep Factory, a service dedicated to managing snoring and sleep apnea. This Series A investment was exclusively led by SBVA. Established in August 2022, The Sleep Factory offers a personalized solution for snoring relief through an oral device named 'Pasa'. By submitting an online order for a teeth mold, users can have their custom-made Pasa device created using 3D printing technology. Additionally, the company provides an application called 'After Sleep' that enables users to measure snoring noise levels and monitor their sleep conditions. Last year, The Sleep Factory introduced a subscription service without any commitments or penalties, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on users. Currently, the company boasts a subscriber base exceeding 5,000 individuals. Having secured the MFDS medical device Class 2 certification and the Ministry of Health and Welfare's health technology certification, The Sleep Factory is also in the process of preparing for FDA approval in the United States for the upcoming year. The SBVA executive who spearheaded this investment emphasized that The Sleep Factory's Pasa subscription service has demonstrated a retention rate of over 65% among subscribers after one year. This success is attributed to the service's user-friendly interface, which is more convenient compared to traditional snoring treatments. The executive further underscored the promising potential of the subscription model within the expanding sleep care and sleep tech market, which is anticipated to worth 40 trillion KRW (29 billion USD) by the year 2026. In response to the investment, Park Jun-hyuk, CEO of The Sleep Factory, expressed the significance of being acknowledged for the company's technological proficiency and subscription solution capabilities. He stated the company's plans to bolster its specialized research team and allocate resources towards technological advancements to ensure that individuals with sleep disorders can access their services at a reasonable cost.
