The following contains spoilers from the Justified: City Primeval season finale, which aired Aug. 29 on FX and begins streaming on Hulu Aug. 30.
Walton Goggins told a little white lie — though Justified fans are likely to forgive him.
Ahead of Justified: City Primeval’s July launch, TV’s erstwhile Boyd Crowder indicated that he would not appear in the eight-episode revival, saying (albeit in a roundabout manner), “There’s a season… for everything” and, “This isn’t the right place and time.”
And yet there Boyd was in the finale’s closing coda, orchestrating a successful prison escape — and in doing so, possibly luring longtime frenemy (and fellow coal digger) Raylan Givens out of a barely begun retirement. (Fun fact: If one were to parse Goggins’ words, he did say that he himself would be watching City Primeval “to the bitter end,” emphasis ours. Wink-wink…?)
“Walton was out there doing a lot of press – for [HBO’s Righteous] Gemstones and stuff,” and yet he kept a lid on his encore, notes Justified: City Primeval co-showrunner Michael Dinner, who co-wrote and directed the finale. “He’s a pretty good poker player!”
Elaborating on his and co-showrunner David Andron’s approach to the crowd-pleasing cameo, Dinner tells TVLine, “Here is the thing — we did it for fun.”
“Originally I was going to develop this as its own thing, as City Primeval,” Dinner reminds. But when Quentin Tarantino suggested to Timothy Olyphant (on the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) that Elmore Leonard’s City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit novel could be rejiggered into a Raylan Givens story, Dinner and Andron had to consider “the Walton of it all,” Dinner says.
“What we didn’t want to do,” Dinner asserts, “is have the scene where Raylan ‘can’t understand’ Mansell, so in the middle of the episodes he goes to talk to ‘the Hannibal Lecter character'” — imprisoned Boyd Crowder — “to say, ‘I don’t understand the bad guy! Tell me about him!'” Instead, “David’s pitch to me was, ‘It’s the elephant in the room, everybody’s gonna be wondering, ‘Where’s Walton?’ So let’s just do it and have fun with it at the end.’ That was the intention.”
After securing star and executive producer Olyphant’s sign-off, Dinner and Andron got to penning the finale scenes involving Boyd. “We then sent it to Walton, and he loved it,” Dinner recalls. “He was actually the first one to say, ‘Welllll, you knowwww… if we have a good time… he’s out there in the world, isn’t he? We can always do another rodeo.'”
“It was so great to have him back,” Dinner says, “and with both with him and Tim, I think their performances are fantastic. I feel with both of them that they’re 10 years down the road and that there’s a maturity in the characters, where it wasn’t just picking up where we left off. There’s a lot of road beneath their feet. But just seeing [Walton] do this again, and seeing the character after spending time in prison, it was a ball.”
So is it safe to say that Raylan does take that phone call on the boat, setting up a hunt for fugitive Boyd? “Or, it’s gonna keep ringing…,” Dinner counters. (Read our full Q&A with Dinner, including about Winona’s return.)
What did you think of City Primeval, and do you want more Raylan stories?
Holy crap, I loved that finale. I want more Justified.
It was so beyond excellent! Raylan just HAS to go after Boyd and I loved seeing Winona. I want more Justified too.
I wanted Raylan and Winona to somehow end up kissing. They have such great chemistry and you could tell Raylan still hasn’t been able to let her go. Also, great seeing the fab Natalie Zea!
Stop sending anything
I was so excited to see Raylan’s return in JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVIL. A follow up season with Tim and Walton would be too much to hope for…but hope springs eternal! Great job, everyone!
It was wonderful seeing Raylan strut his stuff in Detroit. Loved the casting and the story.
We need a reunion with Raylan & Boyd!! Come on!
Do season 2 with Boyd!! Can’t wait!
MORE please!!!!!!!!! Great writing, great cast, just a great show…and fantastic finale!
Let’s not forget, it was so great to see Natalie Zea again as Raylan’s ex-wife. Man, it hurts to say ex-, I always pictured them growing old together.
A+ Finale! Excited to see where they go from here with Goggins and hopefully, Zea.
Seeing Natalie Zea, who has not aged a day, and the sparks between the two. I agree, it hurts to say ex but it gave me some hope that maybe they will find their way back to each other. The love and passion is still there. As Raylan says, he should have retired sooner. He wouldn’t have lost her.

Great limited series. Awards to Holbrook and Olyphant. Great story and ridiculously satisfying last 25 minutes
Listen here when I heard Justified City Primeval, I was yes God Raylan Givens rides again! I was so excited and I was not disappointed. I loved it! I want more and Boyd Crowder was the icing on the cake I needed. I pray we get to ride this ride again, one more time Raylan and Boyd! I need more Justified please let’s go!
Admit when first heard about it. please don’t series was perfect with perfect ending. They did pull it off. If there is more will watch. Reghardless of Who is in it.
The only good thing about the season finale was the last 10 minutes. The whole season has been terrible. Horrible casting and the writing was as if it had been written by amateurs. If it’s the same writers as this season, I won’t be watching the next season and hopefully he does not go back to Detroit. So boring. Very disappointed.
I enjoyed it. Thought it was a nice darker thrilling addition to the Justified library. I liked the cast too. The Detroit visit was a one-time thing, based off of Elmore Leonard’s novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit and short story “Fire in the Hole”. It’s not like we would be getting more of that.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MORE JUSTIFIED!!!!!!
I miss Boyd and Raylan together. Their scenes with each other were magic. I loved hearing the cadence of their conversations. Like beautiful music to my ears. Please bring them back
Honestly I’d listen to the 2 of them read the phone book they are so good together!
OMG! I kept saying to my husband, “Wouldn’t it be a kick if Boyd showed up?” And he did!! Please, please let Pattimthat be a teasing for more Justified!!!!!!
What a show. When I heard it was coming back I was thrilled. Saw the first Justified and became a fan. The scrip and actors were so good. I do hope you keep doing more shows in the future.
I’m certainly hoping there will be another season and that Boyd will be in it. As good as this season was, there was just something “missing”… and of course it was the whole Raylan vs Boyd thing.
Wouldn’t have made sense to have Boyd in this season (even if he wasn’t in prison) since it all took place in the Detroit area, but now that he’s on the loose, I’m guessing the next season will be back home in Kentucky. Or maybe Florida?
I agree. I didn’t even feel like watching this season, their dynamic is the biggest pull for me with this show. Fingers crossed there’ll be another season or limited series or whatever…
Cannot wait until they decide to do another season of Justified! with Mr. Crowder AND his daughter!!! It is just a great show, they MUST DO IT!
Please bring back goggins!! You won’t be sorry…in my eyes he makes the show so much more enjoyable
raylan and boyd together again
it will be great to see boyd scheming
We need another season. Back in Harlan.
I would love to see more Raylan, Boyd, Art, Ava in Kentucky. Would’ve loved Dewey to continue too.
Please give us more of Raylan. And Boyd!!!
We watched both and we love us some Goggins and Olyphant!! More fun please!! PLEASE😁

Wow. What a misogynistic thing to say. Would you have been happier if he had gotten together with Sandy? Would that be more acceptable? Seriously.
Why in the heck did you keep us hanging like that. I loved the Justified series, and the Justified Prime Evil series did not disappoint. But the finale episode, with Boyd escaping, and Rayland on the boat and the ringing phone!!! Seriously!!! There’s got to be more. Please tell me there’s another season coming.
Really enjoyed the series. TO was excellent as always. I realize that they had to keep Clement going until the final episode, but I felt that some of close calls he had with the law were a bit contrived. The writing could have been better in those instances. Overall, it was great and I’m in for another season.
